Roadway friction tester

The Roadway Friction Tester was developed by Halliday Technologies to allow a maintenance vehicle to measure the road friction while, at the same time, performing its normal duties, such as snow removal or road surface treatment. The system uses the, already onboard, hydraulic system to deploy and retract the wheel which is located in front of the drive axle underneath the vehicle. The system is designed to feed data showing road friction to the driver via a display in the cab of the truck. The system has worked flawlessly in tests and has had no adverse effect on the vehicle systems or handling.

Street castings

A new product, Final Cut from Site Solutions, eliminates the need for pavement removal around street castings, thereby improving safety for road workers, reducing congestion for motorists, and saving money for municipalities. Final Cut castings are made of cast iron and allow the cover and rim elevation of manholes, catch basins, and hand holes to be raised by 1.5 inches, regardless of the thickness of the cover. The new cover provides the same strength and function as the cover it replaces. The castings are now available for municipal projects and come in a variety of sizes and shapes.

Metallizing program

Metallizing One-Stop, by Aquatherm International, is a comprehensive metallizing program that provides the customer with one source for high production electric arc spray equipment, operator training, metallizing wire, and QA/QC, as well as a variety of consulting services. Thermal spray operator training courses are offered monthly at Aquatherm’s Virginia Beach facility. Students are taught the fundamentals of metallizing and undergo extensive hands-on training. On-site training can be arranged if necessary.

Rumble strips

Advance Traffic Markings has introduced a new color to their line of rumble strips. These new, bright yellow-green strips should help to make dangerous areas highly visible. The strips are preformed, 150-mil rubber tape and require no special equipment to install.

Joint sealant removal

The patented J-knife, designed by J-Knife & Associates, has been developed into “the fastest method to remove concrete joint sealant,” says the company. The tool is capable of cutting 65 feet per minute, requiring less manhours and less pavement downtime, and has a universal mounting bracket that will mount to any bucket. A hand-held unit works well for small projects, corners, vertical joints, or difficult seams.

Sweeper

The PS300 walk-behind pedestrian sweeper, by MADVAC Inc., introduced a new feature — the high-side dump. The simple-to-use feature saves time and money for the operator with the push of a button. The litter container basket simply lifts and dumps debris into a regular trash bag by tipping the container over to one side of the vehicle. The sweeper can be used on city streets effectively, yet is small enough to get into confined places.

Highway preservation system

The new DRM System, developed by Terry Industries, Inc., is a highway/road surfacing process used to prepare pavements prior to bituminous overlays/surfacing or as a final stand alone preventive maintenance sealing/wearing surface. The single-pass treatment effectively controls and retards pavement distress and provides a complete surface or interlayer membrane.

The application includes a hot elastic sealant to fill all pavement voids and cracks and provides a surface membrane that dissipates crack forces, waterproofs the structure, and is durable to traffic.

Anti-icing/deicing products

Earth Friendly Chemicals, Inc. secured the product and trademark rights to the Ice Ban product line. Some of the Ice Ban products available are: Summit — an improved all purpose formula designed for all aspects of ice and snow control; Performance Plus — designed to adapt to all snow-fighting systematic approaches; and Ultra — provides unparalleled results as an anti-icer/deicer with a clear, non-staining, non-tracking formula and a very mild odor.

Expansion joint seal

Joint Guard from Garon Products provides a durable, flexible epoxy seal for expansion joint repairs that will not become brittle and break out with movement. The sealant flexes up to 50% so your expansion joint repairs stay in place, and its 100% solids formula stands up to heavy traffic and chemical contact. Joint Guard is pourable, self-leveling, self-priming, and non-shrink.

Modular concrete fence/sound barrier

Cedarcrete is a patented, precast concrete fence system/sound barrier developed by Designer Concrete Fences. This fence system features a deeply embossed woodgrain texture with a board-on-board pattern on both sides. With a deep tongue and groove interlock between the vertical panels, complete privacy is assured in this revolutionary design.

Hopper spreader

The PHS Hopper Spreader from Elkin Manufacturing is designed to fit into the bed of any make or model truck. This spreader has a 1.5-cubic yard material capacity and a powerful, fuel-efficient, 8.5-horsepower Briggs & Stratton engine. The hopper is constructed of 10-gauge, mild or 304 stainless steel and includes an inverted-V shaped shield over the conveyor. Other standard features include a 12-inch heavy-duty polyure-thane spinner disc, three adjustable deflector shields to control the spread pattern, and an in-cab electric control box.

V Plow

The new Sno-Way SM01 V Plow features a patented down pressure option, a high performance power unit, an easy on/off hydraulic power stand, load-absorbing plow/ frame design, and a twin pivot design. The triple rolling action allows you to move more snow.

Traffic signal lamps

Standard Omega traffic signal lamps from Litetronics International, Inc. offer 8,000 to 10,000 user hours; double-life Omega lamps feature a two-year rated life of 16,000 user hours. Both lamp designs are Krypton filled, have uniform cooling, and feature a proprietary gettering system to maintain high purity throughout lamp life.

Retractable delineator

National Intelligent Traffic Systems has developed a safe and easy way to allow for traffic delineation to be modified on a periodic basis automatically. The Its delineator is constructed of durable, flexible pylon and is housed in a self-contained cartridge recessed in the ground. The pylon is easily raised or lowered as needed.
