Asphalt release agent
Rhomar
Industries, Inc. has a remarkable new product, Enviro-Slide Ultra, that
solves the problem of sticky asphalt mixes making a mess in your equipment.
It creates a heat resistant synthetic shield that prevents adhesion of all
hot-mix asphalt and Superpave mixes to your equipment. The product is easy
to apply and can be used on truck-beds, pavers, compactors, shuttle-buggies,
and related equipment and tools, and it won’t strip the oils from your
aggregate. Enviro-Slide is in total compliance with Federal and State
regulations.

GPS package
Nu-Metrics
Inc., a member of Quixote Transportation Safety, has introduced the
Nitestar Global Positioning System package for use in mobile applications
like highway maintenance trucks and other vehicles. The package includes a
Nitestar NS-60 Distance Measuring Instrument, a GPS receiver, and Survey
Data Management Software. The NS-60 DMI displays various information such as
distance, speed, and operational mode. The GPS receiver fits in the palm of
your hand and features a magnetic base that allows the unit to be externally
mounted. SDM software provides the ability to organize, view, and report
information collected during various surveys. The package can be used for
road-sign inventory, utility company and highway asset management, emergency
911 addressing, construction mapping, and winter maintenance.

Striper/stencil truck
The EH Striper, developed by Linetech Design & Mfg. Ltd., combines
the advantages of a walk-behind striper and a stencil truck, allowing one
operator to handle a wider variety of painting jobs than other machines. The
power unit fits any pick-up truck and the multi-pump model allows two
operators to work simultaneously. The unit also offers a lightweight cart
with two spray guns for intersection striping. The cart is stored on a
special rear-mounted platform when not being used.

Rear-steering broom
The SweepPro
Broom from Rosco, a
LeeBoy Company, has a front-mounted broom with joystick controls for
excellent control, while rear-steering makes it extremely maneuverable in
tight spaces. The broom is powered by an 85-horsepower Cummins diesel engine
with responsive hydrostatic drive and has an 8-foot brush, which makes it a
workhorse for cleanup at construction sites. Using the quick-change core
release system, one person can quickly and easily change the brush core. The
two-door, climate-controlled, ROPS cab provides the operator with excellent
visibility, safety, and protection from the elements, dirt, dust, and
debris.

Slurry removal
Dimas’ new
Slurry Containment System is designed to remove slurry during normal,
one-person saw operation. It removes nearly all of the slurry while the saw
is cutting, leaving the operator an unobstructed view of the cut line and
helping to eliminate some slip-and-fall hazards. The slurry and water mix is
vacuumed through a 2-inch suction hose to a patented separation canister.
Then, slurry is pumped through a discharge hose into a 55-gallon drum or
holding tank. The system is available as either a gas or electric cart model
and works with most manufacturers’ flat saws.

Vegetation management
ChemLink’s new vegetation management herbicide, Oryzalin 4 Pro, is for
use in grounds maintenance, landscape management, and turf and vegetation
management. The product is a soil-applied herbicide with a three- to
four-week activation window and has resistance to leaching even on sandy
soils. The herbicide’s low water solubility and high absorption to soil
allows its precise placement in the top few inches where most weeds
germinate.
A second herbicide manufactured by ChemLink, LLC, Metsulfuron Methyl DF,
provides broad-spectrum control of many problem weeds and brush species,
especially on utility and pipeline rights-of-way. The product can be tank
mixed with a variety of other herbicides to broaden the spectrum of control.

Weather data software
Climatronics Corporation just released WeatherView software, a universal
package for the presentation and archiving of meteorological data from
digital weather stations. The software runs under all current versions of
Windows and accepts an ASCII serial data stream with up to eight variables
as an input. The user defines each variable in the data stream, selects the
data averaging period, sensor update period, and system name.

3D control panel
The System Five 3D Control Panel from Topcon Positioning Systems is a
user-friendly graphical interface that works with Topcon’s 3D-GPS+
satellite-directed machine control system to give the operator unprecedented
control and monitoring options. This device has a built-in Windows CE
operating system capable of downloading job site plans from compact flash
memory cards, and displays data on a large, color, touch screen for ease of
operation. With a GPS connection, the panel can accommodate wireless,
e-mailed communications, providing the means to deliver last minute
corrections from remote facilities that are monitoring the job. Additional
features include a USB port for connecting a laptop for programming
purposes, a solid-state hard drive, and a rugged housing.

Flat saw
The new MagLite flat saw from Dimas features a simple design and rugged
construction for use on small sawing applications. Available with either a
9- or 13-horsepower Honda gasoline engine, the saw accommodates up to a
16-inch blade with right or left side cutting to a maximum depth of 5.625
inches. Features include an exclusive handlebar-mounted blade depth-control
system and emergency stop button, a frame-mounted parking brake for safety,
large rear wheels for balance and maneuverability, a hinged-front blade
guard for easier blade mounting, and a telescoping handlebar that adjusts to
the operator’s height. An optional 5.5-gallon water tank is adjustable.

Pavement repair
Roklin
Systems Inc. just introduced FloMix, a new, thin, easily-flowable,
non-shrinking, polymer-silica/quartz slurry that can be used to repair
asphalt that gets heavy traffic. FloMix, is applied at room temperature over
deteriorated pavement, spread evenly with a squeegee or trowel, then
finished with a black topping sand broadcast by hand over the surface. The
repair restores structural strength over pot holes, cracks, alligatoring,
raveling, and rutting. Finished repairs are to grade, waterproof, and are
visually similar to surrounding asphalt.

An Easier Way to Handle Snow Fence
Each fall the Mercer County Highway Department road crew in Beulah, North
Dakota installs about 3,000 feet of wooden snow fence. The fence is
installed mostly on private property and must be removed in the spring. The
50-foot long fence sections are rolled up by hand, and become very difficult
to roll up into a tight roll for transport back to the yard.
We developed a possible solution, gave it some thought, made a rough
sketch of the idea, and sent it to the welder-fabricator, Larry Aipperspach,
who built a machine to roll up snow fence, says Kenneth Nelson, highway
superintendent for Mercer County.
Aipperspach salvaged some axles from a rotary motor and installed a
flatbed on them for his trailer. He borrowed the power plant (18-hp Fairmont
hydraulic system) from the sign shop. An orbital motor and bearings were
purchased. A 3-inch drill stem shaft, approximately 4 feet in length, was
notched its entire length to insert the wooden lathe (double) for winding
the fence. The motor is mounted to drive (chain drive) the shaft for winding
up the fence. The shaft has a swivel on one end and is detachable on the
other end so the fence can be removed after rolling.
Next, the mechanism was assembled. Two end slats of the fence are
inserted into the notched area of the drill stem. The motor is then
activated and the fence is wound. For a tighter wound fence, a worker can
hold tight on the other end of the fence or stand on it. After the fence is
wound, the one end of the shaft (drill stem) is detached from the trailer
frame and the fence can be removed.
The crew will normally have 100 feet of fence in a roll. There is
sufficient clearance on the trailer (24 inches) that up to 200 feet could be
wound up, but it may be awkward to handle. While they haven’t used plastic
fence, the roller would also work for that. The generator and other
mountings are removable, so the trailer can be used for other purposes.
The new method provides a less bulky roll for transporting, is easier to
handle, and provides the ability to haul more rolls on a trailer, making the
operation more efficient.
The machine was the Annual County Road Advisors Conference 2000 “You
Show Us” Contest winner for North Dakota.
