Band clamping tool
Sign and signal installers can
now apply Ultra-Lok band clamps quickly and easily with a powerful,
battery-powered tool developed by Band-It-Idex. Pre-determined band lengths
from 18 inches to 100 feet reduce waste and simplify installation while
torque settings provide consistent clamping tension to eliminate guesswork.
The portable UL4000 tool installs 0.75- and 0.5-inch-wide Ultra-Lok clamps
up to five times faster than traditional band and buckle methods. The
clamping system provides a safer, faster, stronger, and easier installation
with less time required in the work zone and fewer call backs for sign and
signal adjustments. The speed and consistency of installation also reduces
training time, according to the company.

Driver feedback signs
3M’s Driver Feedback Signs advise drivers of their
speed and encourage speed-limit compliance to help improve safety. Built-in
radar and a highly visible display command the attention and respect of
drivers, especially in high-hazard areas such as speed transition zones,
pedestrian crossings, school zones, dangerous curves, work zones, and
collector arterials. A combination of fluorescent reflective yellow-green
pixels that reflect ambient light during the day and light from approaching
headlights after dark with LED illumination, create a display that is highly
visible in all lighting and weather conditions. The signs are available in
several configurations and are backed up with expert technical support and a
toll-free hotline.

Edge-lit street signs
Carmanah’s LED Edge-Lit technology provides a
rugged, no- maintenance solution for internally illuminated street-name
signs and other traffic signs. The technology consists of LEDs mounted along
the top and bottom edge of the sign, concealed in the frame. Light is
emitted vertically from the top and bottom through a clear acrylic sheet and
is refracted outwards horizontally through the sign legend. The signs
operate maintenance free for over 50,000 hours, with no bulbs or ballasts to
replace. A 6-foot sign requires less than 15 watts, compared to 192 watts
for a fluorescent sign, and 88 watts for an LED retro-fit sign. Performance
is unaffected by cold temperatures.

Lane merger system
IRD’s Lane Merger system provides a solution to
address the problem of aggressive drivers making late lane merges as they
approach a lane closure. The system creates an appropriately sized Do Not
Pass zone, encouraging orderly lane changes at a point where traffic flow is
smoother, gaps are present, and accident potential is lower. As traffic
conditions change during the day, the system automatically adjusts the
length of the no-passing zone to provide appropriate traffic control.
The system is designed to operate upstream of a
construction zone and is made up of a number of roadside signaling stations
equipped with traffic sensors for detecting vehicle presence, controller
electronics for determining how long the no-passing zone should be in
response to the length of the detected traffic queue, and wireless
communication devices that permit coordinated system operation. Each station
is trailer mounted and includes solar panels and batteries for complete
independence and portability.
