Color meter

A new partnership agreement between Konica Minolta and Dobco in the color instruments product line is offering a new color instrument called the Konica Minolta Spectrophotometer CM 2500C. The instrument is a compact, lightweight, portable, and accurate color meter to make quantifying colors simple and instant. The large display shows the facts about the colors at a glance. The internal software contains all necessary colorimetric equations and standard light sources and communicates in six different languages. In combination with the optional Color Data Software SpectraMagic NX, the instrument becomes a complete quality control and color management system.

Noise barrier system

CYRO Industries’ new transparent Paraglas Soundstop TL4 System was developed for noise mitigation on bridges and elevated roadway applications. The lightweight system incorporates transparent Paraglas Soundstop GS CC Noise Barrier Sheet that reduces noise at a fraction of the weight of other TL4 approved barriers and enhances natural aesthetics by providing transparent intervals along the highway noise wall. The system weighs as little as 25 pounds per square foot. The hard, smooth surface remains clean through exposure to rain and facilitates graffiti removal using a simple spray-on solution and pressure wash. The sheet is extremely resistant to the elements, with excellent UV light stability and light transmission, and will not yellow.

Remote-control flagger system

ISC, Inc.’s remote-control flagger system controls motorists in construction work zones. A remote control or manual switch initiates the swing arm and moves a lighted stop/slow sign 90 degrees horizontally into the traffic lane to control traffic. When the arm starts to move, the lights on the sign are lighted in an alternating pattern. The stop sign has red lights and the slow sign has yellow lights. The portable and trailer flaggers are used in conjunction with the flagger personnel who can remain out of harms way.

Crash cushion system

The Universal TAU-II Crash Cushion System from Barrier Systems is designed, tested, and approved to NCHRP 350 testing conditions for hazard widths up to 8.5 feet at speeds from 30 to 62 miles per hour. The system is easy to install, requires little maintenance, and uses universal parts for repair. Two people can replace parts after an impact in less than 30 minutes.

Portable traffic signal system

Horizon Signal Technologies’ new SQ2AV Flagger Assist Portable Traffic Signal System  addresses the valid concern of OSHA-NIOSH and ATSSA to achieve safer work zones. With an added radio system, up to four signals can be controlled by one person on the side of the road using the hand-held remote-control option. The 12-inch lamps are standard; batteries will run for a full day on one charge. A work-zone horn gives an audible warning if the work zone is violated.

Stripe removal system

The Stripe Hog stripe removal system from Waterblasting.com removes all types of pavement markings from roads and runways through the use of water blasting. The vacuum recovery feature solves the challenges of cleanup, coordination between removal and repainting, and ice in the winter. The absence of a trailer makes the rig easy to backup and maneuver and eliminates the added expense of a trailer. The unit places the operator close to the road and in immediate control of the blast head, allowing for smaller blast widths and an increase in productivity. The swing arm provides a 25-foot radius around the truck cab.

Heavy-duty striper

Advanced Striping Equipment’s ThermoMark HD is a midsize ride-on applicator with a large melting capacity. It provides 100 gallons of hot thermoplastic to ensure minimal interruptions on each job. The unit is designed for a quick turning radius as well as easy speed control. The fluid drive pedals allow you to maintain a constant speed while allowing swift and accurate steering.

Rotating cone dispenser

Centreville Manufacturing’s new Auto Cone 130 is a rotating cone dispenser unit that can be towed behind any standard three-quarter or 1-ton pickup truck. Headlight and turn signal switches control the drop off and pickup of the cones; no truck modifications are necessary. The unit holds 130 standard 36-inch traffic cones with weights permanently attached to the base and drops off and picks up cones from either the passenger or driver’s side of the vehicle.

Dispatch software tool

Congistics Corporation introduced a complete scheduling, resource, and dispatch software tool for the commercial construction industry. ControlBoard’s drag-and-drop feature allows owners, project managers, and dispatchers to see jobs, crews, equipment, and schedules (hours, days, weeks, months) at a glance. As changes are made, the underlying intelligent database engine automatically updates all information across the organization, so everyone is aware of the changes instantly.

Plastic safety barricade

The new RoadRunner plastic safety barricade from Premier Plastics Ltd. has the look of a solid barrier but handles as easily as a portable barricade. Its unique stacking ability saves up to 80% in transportation, storage, and handling costs. Deployment and recovery can be handled by a minimum of one person. The addition of 160 pounds of water or 320 pounds of sand can help anchor the installation in place. The barrier has been tested to NCHRP 350 standards and is approved by the FHWA.

Remotely activated safety systems

IntelliStrobe Safety Systems offers two remotely activated safety systems. One system, the Stop/Slow Paddle AFAD, mechanically turns a light-weight, sturdy plastic Stop/Slow sign to the proper position to direct traffic. The unit extends up to 11 feet. The other system, a Red/Yellow Lens AFAD, directs traffic with large 12-inch LED red or flashing-yellow safety lights attached to a telescoping tube that extends to a height of 9 feet, 6 inches and a 6-foot gate arm.

Both systems provide automatic protection to the work zone from warning signals activated if a motor vehicle goes the wrong way over pneumatic safety hoses spread across both lanes. The operator can also activate the danger alert system with a panic button on the radio transmitter.

Product Application
Styrofan Latex on Roads

BASF’s Styrofan 1186 emulsion latex is being used in Charleston, West Virginia, to repair several miles of Interstate 64 downtown, near the state capital building — an area that includes a complicated clover leaf, intersections, and heavy traffic. The road contractor, Ahern and Associates, is  doing the work at night, and thanks to the use of latex-modified, rapid-set concrete, the concrete cures fast enough for use the next morning, eliminating road closures and traffic delays.

“Using this innovative technology, we expect to complete this road work in roughly 60 nights,” said Gene Thompson of Ahern and Associates. “Latex-modified, rapid-set concrete cures so fast that it allows work crews to shut down road lanes at 6:00 p.m. and reopen them by 6:00 a.m. During this time, damaged concrete is removed using a combination of conventional milling and hydrodemolition that gives the bridge deck a very rough bondable surface. Next, we apply the modified concrete surface containing Syrofan 1186 latex that ensures excellent adhesion of the new concrete to the original bridge deck surface. Our goal is to get this large structure overlaid with minimal traffic impact, and with minimal inconvenience to motorists.”

Styrofan 1186 is a modified styrene-butadiene dispersion that helps the new concrete adhere well to the scarified bed, prevents intrusion of road salt, and adds important flexural strength that diminishes breakups due to flexing. This commuter-friendly technology is being used in numerous states throughout the country.
