Truck-mounted attenuator
A
new trailer-mounted SST Safe-Stop Truck Mounted Attenuator from
Energy
Absorption Systems, a Quixote Transportation Safety company, requires
minimal modification to host vehicles. This allows quick and simple
attachment, resulting in low installation and operating costs, as well as
increased truck fleet operating flexibility. The attenuator’s length from
the back of the host vehicle is less than 20 feet. An added feature is
anti-rotational dampeners designed to lock the attenuator in place during an
angled impact to maximize effectiveness and minimize impacting vehicles from
gating into a work zone or adjacent lanes. The dampeners also protect the
host truck’s frame by spreading the load of the impacting force and provide
maximum protection for work crews, the impacting driver, adjacent drivers,
and the host vehicle.

Backup alarm
Brigade Electronics’ newest product for construction
equipment, the Broadband Back Up Alarm, can greatly reduce or eliminate
noise complaints in work zones. The backup alarm is safer because it isn’t
heard unless a person is in the danger area behind a backing vehicle.

Catch basin riser
American Highway Products’
catch basin riser reduces
cost and streamlines the adjusting of utilities to new grade when paving a
road. The risers start at 0.5-inch rise and go up in 0.25-inch increments.
They are quick and easy to install and won’t break from installation forces
or uneven manhole frames. Use of the riser saves time and money and
eliminates the need for coordination between paving crews and utility
adjusting crews.

Stormwater management
Hancor’s
new stormwater retention/detention chamber is specially engineered to meet
the demands of subsurface stormwater management applications. LandSaver’s
design offers versatility through design options and can be used in
different applications. Its lightweight construction makes it easy to
install. Secure overlapping joints provide a dependable connection. The
open-bottom design retains stormwater and allows it to infiltrate slowly
into the soil. The chamber can also be used for detention to relieve peak
flows through outlet control structures.

Joint maker
TransTech’s
Notched Wedge Joint Maker was designed and built to provide a sound
interlock of two hot-mix asphalt lanes at the longitudinal joint by shaping
the edge of the hot mat. A short, vertical notch and tapered edge provide a
solid surface and interlock for the adjacent lane. The tapered edge also
provides a mini-ramp for traffic to move back and forth between lanes during
the construction process, thus avoiding the drop off associated with most
roadwork when one lane at a time is laid. The tool mounts on the end of any
paver screed, old or new.

Stormwater detention system
Contech’s
new Optimizer, an underground detention technology system and solution, was
engineered to stabilize and manage stormwater runoff. The system contains
innovative flow-control devices that use a pressure head to begin
immediately discharging at the maximum allowable rate, reducing the required
storage volume. The result is a smaller, more economical corrugated metal
pipe detention system.
The process lowers project installation costs due to
less excavation and backfill necessary on the smaller-size. Less pipe is
also installed, which is ideal for tight sights where larger systems won’t
work.

Silo mixers
Stone Construction Equipment
has two new silo mixers
that are ideal for jobs where mortar, grout, plaster, and color mixers are
supplied in pre-blended bulk. The mixers — the SM1200 and SM2000 (shown) —
have capacities of 12 and 20 cubic feet, respectively, and can be used under
any size silo. They have adjustable legs, which can be set by one person, to
position them within any silo footprint. No outriggers are required.
Bi-directional fork pockets allow the mixers to be picked up and placed by a
variety of lifts and forktrucks. The mixers can also be used in standard
mixing applications.

Graffiti inhibitor/remover
Chemprobe Coating Systems’ new coatings system is
designed to inhibit and remove graffiti. The system is ideal for protecting
structures such as bridges, soundwalls, highways, interstates, and roadside
structures.
Series 626 Dur A Pell GS (Graffiti Shield) is an
inorganic sealer that bonds naturally to a variety of uncoated surfaces,
minimizing the penetration of paint and allowing for easy removal.
Series 680 Mark A Way, in-tended for use in
conjunction with Series 626, is a citrus cleaner that should be applied
directly to the coated surface as soon as possible after a surface has been
defaced. After five to eight minutes, a scrub brush may be used to remove
the graffiti. Then the cleaner is removed with a light washing.

Vehicle-activated traffic-calming
signs
VATCS, vehicle activated traffic calming signs, from
Varitext are now available in North America. Already proven effective in
Europe, these electronic LED roadside signs use pictograms from the MUTCD
that are translated into pixilated LED technology. The pictograms are
enhanced with Slow Down wording beneath the speed readout or with flashing
lights. The signs remain blank until a car approaches exceeding the pre-set
speed, at which time it will light up to warn the driver to slow down.
