Today’s concrete
pavers feature models that can change
widths quicker and more easily than ever before.
These are versatile pavers designed for ease in loading and transport.
Their control systems, moreover, offer the ability to place concrete with
excellent precision. The following are some highlights of major paver
manufacturers’ machines.
Paving Up To 32-feet Wide
The SF
2700 by Power
Pavers Inc.
has the right balance of weight and size to pave either primary or secondary
roads. The machine can pave up to 32-feet wide with integral curbs on one or
both sides. The SF 2700 can pave variable depths, from 0 to 16 inches, and
change depths on the go. Changing widths is done quickly and easily. No
disassembly is required with the 12-foot-long tracks to transport the paver
from job to job.
The SF 2700:
- Provides a hydraulically shaped crown on the go with crown points for
offset crown situations.
- Is maintained easily.
- Provides 27 inches of track clearance, giving it one of the narrowest
profiles in the industry. The machine can slide by obstacles beside the
pour that would stop other pavers.

New Operating System, Quiet Operation
Gomaco’s
new GHP-2800 paver features the company’s proprietary digital
operating system, the G21. The easy-to-understand red LED display is ideal
for daylight or night-time operations. And the G21 has advanced system
diagnostics that automatically pinpoint and identify problems.
This control system provides a selective steering dial for five different
modes of controlling the tracks. Smart hydraulic steering cylinders,
interfaced with the G21, allow push-button steering setup. The G21 can also
interface with stringlines or stringless technology, 3-D control systems,
and laser technology.
The GHP-2800 paver features a dual-telescoping frame that extends 6.5
feet on both sides of the machine. It will slipform widths from 12 feet up
to 32 feet with additional frame inserts.
The paver’s cooling system features a centrifugal fan for noise
reduction and added cooling capacity. With a sound insulation package, the
paver is one of the quietest in the world.

Automated 3-D Screeding
Somero
Enterprises makes three models of its Laser Screed machines, which all
feature a horizontal telescoping boom with a screeding head mounted at the
end. Although the screeds are used primarily for placing flat floors, each
of the three screed models can be fitted with a 3-D Profiler System that
allows concrete to be placed and surfaced automatically over contoured sites
such as roadways, runways, parking lots and the like.
The 3-D profiler enables the screed to work effectively in three
dimensions.
The three Laser Screeds are:
- The S-240, which has a 12-foot-wide screeding head mounted on a
20-foot boom, to cover 240 square feet.
- The S-160, which has an 8-foot-wide screeding head mounted on a
20-foot boom.
- The S-100, which has an 8-foot-wide screeding head mounted on a
12-foot boom.
- The S-240 has a 65-horsepower engine and overall transport length of
28 feet, 5 inches.

Variable-Width Pavers
Terex
Roadbuilding offers three models of four-track, hydraulic
variable-width pavers. These pavers change widths in minutes through the use
of horizontally telescoping mainframes. The three models:
The CMI Terex SF 2204 HVW, which has infinitely variable paving widths
between 8 and 20 feet.
The SF 2284 HVW has infinitely variable paving widths between 10 to 28
feet.
The SF 2324 HVW features infinitely variable widths between 10 and 32
feet.
The SF 2204 HVW is the utility-sized machine in the group. It can be
fitted with retractable side-mounted molds for off-set paving of
curb/gutter, median barrier, and shoulders. The SF 2204 HVW also has an
inset paving capability.
On all three machines, the attached spreading and finishing tools
telescope with the mainframe during paving-width adjustments. And all three
machines have power-swing legs. Transport widths on the three: 8.5 feet,
11.5 feet, and 11 feet, 10 inches.

New Configurations, Options
Guntert
& Zimmerman now offers the S850 Slipform Paver with several new
configurations and versatile optional attachments. The S850 can now be
ordered with either a single- or double-telescopic tractor frame, which
allows paving widths from 10 to 38 feet. The telescopic frame extension,
coupled with the 90º steering option, makes it very easy to change widths
and maneuver the S850.
With the QUADRA bolster option, the S850 can self-load onto a
10-foot-wide truck trailer or a standard lowboy truck with or without the
paving kit attached. The newest S850 attachment is a Compact Dowel Bar
Inserter. The CDBI can be attached or removed in a few hours. When the CDBI
module is ordered with the self-loading option, the CDBI can be
hydraulically raised so a trailer can back underneath the kit and load the
paver for transport.

Various Configurations Available
The
M-8100 paver from Miller Formless Co. can be configured to pour curb
and gutter, barrier wall, bridge parapet, and highway pavement. When set up
with the straddle pave kit, the M-8100 can pave up to 16-feet wide. The kit
includes side forms that adjust from 0 to 12 inches for paving full depth or
attached to another slab. A hydraulic spreader auger moves and strikes off
the concrete. The machine has a vibrator lift for raising the vibrators over
baskets or joints. Both sides have edge fade control.
The same kit, mounted with the side-mount paving truss section on the
side of the M-8100, can pour up to 12-feet wide for shoulders or other
sections where there may not be room for a track on the outside.
