Barricade boards
Plastic Safety Systems’ new generation of barricade
boards features molded through hardware holes for added strength and ease of
hardware installation; recessed through holes for use with flush-mounted
hardware to protect sheeting; and sealed board ends to increase strength as
well as keep dirt and moisture out.
The Wave is made of durable
ultraviolet-stabilized prime polyethylene with a reinforced structure; comes
in standard lengths of 4, 6, and 8 feet; and is NCHRP-350 approved.

Pre-emergent herbicide
Nufarm Americas’ Predict is a pre-emergent residual
herbicide that is an 80% nonflurazon formulation used for long-term weed
control. The herbicide can be used in a vast array of vegetation management
settings such as roadsides, railroads, utilities, rights-of-way, and many
other sites. It can be used in a tank-mix program for different weed control
problems and situations. Syngenta Crop Protection is the exclusive
distributor.

Walk-behind concrete saws
The new PC 18 line of walk-behind concrete saws from
Target, a division of Electrolux Construction Products, features a compact
design with a saw width of 24 inches, overall height of 40.25 inches, a
maximum blade capacity of 18 inches, and a maximum cutting depth of 6.625
inches. The saws are built with a one-piece box-type steel frame that
reduces vibration from the blade and increases sawing production. This frame
extends saw life and reduces component wear. Two models are available, the
9-horsepower PC 18 9H and the 13-horsepower PC 18 13H.

Jaw crushers
The Danex DX 12 and DX 40 (above) jaw crushers from
Total Machine Concepts are all-electric driven crushing tools used primarily
in confined space demolition work sites. They crush as much as 8 cubic yards
of concrete and other materials per hour into manageable 0.75- to 4-inch
pieces. The material can then be removed or put back into the site as
backfill or construction base. Benefits include reduced manpower hours and
reduced material handling and dump/disposal fees.

Vacuum litter collector
The new high-capacity
Madvac LX300 vacuum litter
collector, which can fit in a pickup truck or tow-behind trailer, can vacuum
5 cubic yards of debris into a 3-cubic yard hopper with a 50-foot-long hose.
The diesel-powered vacuum was designed to vacuum compact heavy-duty litter
such as cans, bottles, newspapers, plastic, cigarette filters, and paper
bags from streets, highways, construction sites, and so on. Features include
variable suction control and a 50-foot-long, 8- or 12-inch-diameter hose.

Patching machine
Wildcat Manufacturing’s self-contained,
velocity-fill patching machine can be pulled with any 1-ton or larger truck
and doesn’t require a dump body. A 2-yard aggregate hopper and 100-gallon
emulsion tank are all contained within the patcher body. The
finger-tip-control boom keeps the operator a safe distance from the repair
area. The 41-horsepower diesel engine provides power to all systems, as well
as on-site heating of the emulsion. The SP-10 works well on all types of
pavement repair.

Electromagnetic pavement measurement
The PaveTracker Plus, an electromagnetic sensing
device from Troxler Electronic Laboratories, measures the dielectric
constant of an asphalt pavement, slab, or specimen and relates that constant
to the material’s density.
It can provide the user with a quick indication
of pavement segregation, areas of low density and overall pavement
uniformity. The device has added data storage capability for up to 999
readings and/or projects, a 30-button keypad, a 4x20 LCD screen, a backlit
display, rechargeable batteries, and telescoping handle.

Road patch rollers
Root Spring Scraper’s road-patch rollers easily hook
up to any existing plow hitch with no modification necessary. The heavy-duty
24-inch-diameter drums are now available in 8-foot lengths in addition to
the 4-foot length. Both sizes have an attached spray tank and scraper bar to
keep the drum clean. An optional hydraulic 6-inch side shift is available on
the 4-foot roller.

Infrared asphalt heater/generator
Trackless Vehicles’ Electric Infrared Asphalt Heater
and Generator was developed to replace traditional propane asphalt heaters
with a completely different design concept. Very little training is required
due to the simplicity of operation. The operator lowers the heater, sets the
cycle time, and hits the cycle start button. Electric elements produce an
even and controlled heat which will not burn the surface. Since the heater
is mounted in front of the tractor, it is easy to maneuver, allowing the
operator to accurately position it in areas where it would be too awkward to
do so with a trailer unit.
When the asphalt heater is not in use, it can be
separated from the generator frame in less than five minutes by simply
pulling four pins. The 80-horsepower generator will power welders, pumping
stations, municipal buildings, and more. The generator comes equipped with
safety lockouts and security fencing for the tractor and generator.

Asphalt topper
Henke’s Montana Asphalt Topper is a non-traditional
asphalt overlay machine designed for use by local road-maintenance crews.
Approximately 3 cubic yards of hot asphalt are dumped in front of the MAT on
the lane to be repaired. As the MAT is pushed forward by a wheel loader, the
wedge-shaped center section and angled rear assembly break up the asphalt
clods and direct the material over the entire 12-foot width. The
hydraulically adjustable cutting edges, in combination with the loader down
pressure, extrude the asphalt to the desired pre-rolled thickness, usually 1
to 2 inches, filling all ruts and recesses. An experienced road maintenance
crew of seven to eight people can average 1 lane mile per hour.

Nuclear gauge
Troxler Electronic Laboratories’ Enhanced RoadReader
Plus Model 3451 is a deluxe nuclear gauge which measures moisture and
density of multiple construction materials (soils, aggregate, asphalt, and
concrete) and includes an on-board GPS and a wireless personal digital
assistant user interface. Density readings can be accurately measured from 2
to 12 inches employing the direct transmission method or 1 to 4 inches using
the backscatter method. Moisture readings can be read to a maximum depth of
11 inches from the surface of the test material.
Troxler’s Data Management Software is also
supplied, which allows the user to view, print, or save data to the PC. The
gauge runs on NiMH rechargeable batteries which provide two to four weeks of
service at typical usage levels, fully charge in 2.5 hours, and can be
recharged incrementally without damage to the batteries.

Winter maintenance for bridge decks
The new Scruffer Jr. from Snotech, a smaller version
of their Scruffer, pulverizes hardpacked snow and scarifies ice on bridge
decks, walkways, and more. Available working widths range from 36 to 52
inches in 2-inch increments. The self-powered units can be supplied with a
radio-control package that allows the operator to control activities —
start/stop engine, engage/disengage drum clutch, and extend/retract prime
mover engagement pins — from within the cab.
The Scruffer Jr. can be attached to any small- to
medium-size tractor with a 3- to 5-foot-wide bucket. Discharge from the unit
ejects into the bucket which can be emptied as needed.
