1,000-watt light tower

GTM Canada’s new 1,000-watt light tower illuminates up to 100,000 square feet for nighttime road construction and maintenance. This alternative light source is portable and easily installed by a single person in three minutes.

The unit is light and compact — it collapses to fit in a car trunk 2 by 2 by 1.5 feet. The light tower extends to a 15-foot working height.

Hydroseeder

The new T280/T330 Series II HydroSeeders from Finn Corporation are the first in the large hydroseeder line to use the field proven clump (clutch/pump) technology. The clump’s unique single-shaft design maximizes horsepower efficiency. The unit also features a centrally located discharge boom; an optional remote control for engine throttle and pump functions; a newly designed loading hatch with a larger opening and curbside lid for more efficient loading of hydroseeding mulch; and a low-profile pivoting hose reel with three locking positions.

Walk-behind joint cleanout saw

Sawtec’s walk-behind JS-110 Joint Cleanout Saw cuts to a 3-inch depth and to within 1.25-inches of front walls. It cleans joints at 20 to 60 feet per minute depending on the application and the material being cut. Screw-down, fine depth control allows the operator to easily set and gauge depth of cut. A new double pointer increases visibility and improves cutting accuracy. The saw features a blade guard designed with upcut rotation which enables easy dust extraction and allows quick connection to a dust collection system.

Mow/apply herbicide simultaneously

Diamond Mowers’ new Wet Blade cuts brush up to 4-inches thick and applies herbicide to the cut portion of the stem simultaneously, saving time and money on roadside vegetation management. Centrifugal force runs the chemical underneath the blade as it spins, where it stays until it touches the top of stubble. A Diamond boom mower can be fitted with the Wet Blade herbicide injection system.

Bird repellent

Bird-X’s new BirdShield is a food-grade, biodegradable bird repellent that, after it dries, has a grape-like odor that irritates birds, yet is environmentally friendly and harmless. Simply paint or spray it on porous, non-porous, or sealed surfaces. Repellency is greatest on porous surfaces and can last up to 10 days or more.

Double Joints Pavement System

Nikolai Beloreshki, civil engineer/bridge and road construction specialist, says the Double Joints Pavement System he developed will help prevent the cracking and premature destruction of pavement caused by temperature changes that cause materials to contract and expand.

The key to the DJPS technology is a rigid trapezoidal-profile reinforcing concrete beam placed along the entire length of the joint and not bonded to the pavement. Beloreshki says the RCB distributes the surface loads along the entire length of the joint onto a larger area, reducing the pressure in the base. The two sloped sides of the RCB provide reliable support to both sides of the slab along the entire length of the joint, allowing for free contraction and expansion of the slab. Built-in water stops on either side of the RCB create near-perfect waterproofing.

Advantages include:

* Improved quality and enhanced durability of construction.

* Substantial increase in productivity and reduction in construction time — the new technology allows for independent and simultaneous completion of construction tasks over a larger area. Pre-cast or cast-in-place RCB elements can be used.

* Significant reduction in investment and production costs — the system eliminates dependency on heavy and expensive equipment.

* Elimination of vibrations and improved driving experience.

According to Beloreshki, the DJPS technology allows companies to become more competitive in the construction market. Companies will no longer have to buy large concrete placing machines to bid for highway and airport projects.

Over-height truck warning system

International Road Dynamics offers a new practical solution to the problem of bridges and highway overpasses being struck by over-height trucks. The Vehicle Over-Height Detection and Warning System detects vehicles approaching areas with height restrictions, provides a warning message to the driver, and directs the driver to take an alternate route.

The system is comprised of a transmitter and receiver. When the transmitter detects an over-height vehicle, a message is transmitted to a warning device, such as flashing lights on a sign, to alert the driver. In addition, an audible alarm can be sounded to warn the driver.

Three-wheel sweeper

The Johnston MX450 three-wheel sweeper’s front-and-center cab location provides an unobstructed view of the street, curb, and gutter brooms at all times, increasing sweeping efficiency, operator effectiveness, and safe sweeping performance. With front-wheel steering, the sweeper handles like a car around obstacles. The low center of gravity and front-wheel design provide greater stability.
