From unusual solutions to new generation machinery, here’s a sampling of exhibit highlights you’ll find at asphalt’s big show this March.

Sakai
Balanced three-wheel roller

Sakai will show its R2H three-wheel static roller for the first time at World of Asphalt. The new 83-inch-wide machine blends key benefits of the old three-wheel and tandem rollers into a new concept in static compaction, according to Sakai. Unlike old three-wheel designs, the R2H features three equal diameter drums, and all three wheels are driven. The equal-diameter drums allow the R2H to develop 365 pounds of force per linear inch across its 83-inch rolling width. Water ballast can be added to vary the output force to work on thicker lifts or soil compaction jobs. Adding drive power to all three wheels improves traction and gradeability, and also helps pull the mix under all three drums for blemish-free compaction, says Sakai.

Also on display will be the newest addition to Sakai’s high-vibration-speed lineup of vibrating rollers. The new SW320 is a 47-inch-wide tandem vibratory roller capable of high-speed compaction using 4,000-vibrations-per-minute frequency.

Wirtgen/Hamm Compaction
New oscillating roller

A new large oscillation roller from Hamm Compaction Division will be among the products from Wirtgen Group to be exhibited at World of Asphalt. The HD12OV is a 13-ton, 78-inch-wide tandem machine and the largest roller in North America to offer Hamm’s exclusive oscillation technology, which works asphalt from side to side rather than by forcing it downward with an up-and-down motion.

Also on display will be the new Voegele 2219T 10-foot paver featuring rubber tracks and an electrically heated, rear-mounted screed. New Wirtgen cold mills will also be on display, including the W 2000, with 7.2-foot cutter drum and folding conveyor, and the compact W 35 DC, Wirtgen’s smallest.

Dynapac
High-capacity cold planer

Dynapac will exhibit the PL2000LS cold planer at World of Asphalt. The company positions this model as a high-capacity unit for customers requiring a machine with a transportation weight of less than 29 tons to meet road transportation regulations. The PL2000LS has the latest functions for control, monitoring, and programming of operational functions, according to Dynapac. It is hydrostatically driven with four steered track drives and has a two-stage front-discharge conveyor system. Its mechanically driven cutting drum uses Kevlar-reinforced V-belts.

Ingersoll Rand
Versatile 15-ton roller

Ingersoll Rand will feature its 15-ton DD-158HFA double drum compactor at World of Asphalt. The top-of-the-line heavyweight features I R’s SMART drum technology which automatically adjusts vibration frequency to both drums to the design frequency for the given amplitude. The system also controls rolling speed, shuts off water spray whenever the roller stops moving, and automatically regulates water flow rates to match changes in rolling speed. The machine’s control system prevents vibration of the trailing drum on cold or hard surfaces at the beginning of each operation, and at transverse joints on bridges or concrete pavement panels.

Heatec
Precise replicas of asphalt equipment

Heatec, an Astec Industries subsidiary, will display one-eighth-scale handmade replicas of their asphalt heating and storage equipment at World of Asphalt. The replicas are part of the highly acclaimed Astec HMA plant replicas that gained worldwide recognition at last year’s Conexpo-Con/Agg show.

Heatec says the precise replicas show how the various components of a hot mix plant are integrated. The display will include a Heatec hot-oil heater skid which includes a heater, asphalt meter, calibration tank, and control panel.

Cimline
One-pass cracksealing

Cimline will feature its Generation II Magma Series melter/applicator with integrated heatlance at World of Asphalt. With a built-in 100-psi air compressor, the 230-gallon-capacity 230DHDC makes crack cleaning and sealing a one-pass operation. The air and propane are routed to 50-foot hoses on a retracting reel. A 30-gallon propane tank  is mounted on the unit. Quick-connect couplings speed crack preparation while the Superflex III hose is said to be the lightest weight electrically heated hose in the industry and offers 24 feet of reach.

Compound Technologies
Automatic asphalt clean-bed system

Compound Technologies will exhibit its automatic drive-through system for spraying asphalt trucks with a release agent before they are loaded with asphalt. The Eliminator applies a diluted mixture of SPX-7 asphalt release agent evenly to all surfaces that need to be protected, with different ratios for different mixes. The system includes an infrared detection system, and can apply coatings in less than 10 seconds for tandem and tri-axle trucks, and less than 14 seconds for long trailer and live-bottom trucks.

Roadtec
Unique spray paver takes a bow

Roadtec will display its newly announced asphalt spray paver, the SP-200, at World of Asphalt. The new unit allows the contractor to spray asphalt cement or emulsion directly in front of the asphalt mix before it is laid for NovaChip applications or for traditional paving. Spraying tack seconds before the asphalt is laid provides a strong bond between the existing surface and the new pavement, especially important with thin overlays, according to Roadtec. The company says its SP-200 eliminates the need for separate tack trucks and does away with the inconvenience of tack adhering to the tires of other vehicles on site as is often the case when tack is sprayed before the paver arrives.

Caterpillar
Two new asphalt pavers

Caterpillar Paving introduced two new asphalt pavers last year. The 10-foot, track-mounted AP-1055D features a 167-horsepower Tier 3 engine, an 8 cubic-yard hopper, dual operator stations, and Cat’s proprietary material handling system with independent feeder and auger controls. Its high capacity cooling system varies fan speed according to demand, reducing noise and fuel consumption.

Also new is the AP-800D, an 8-foot, 130-horsepower rubber-tire paver with a four-speed hydrostatic drive system. Anti-slip control is a unique feature of the drive system; if one drive wheel slips, it allows the other to propel the paver.
