Innovative loader linkage
Ingersoll-Rand
says its new compact wheel loaders, the 11,240-pound WL-350 and the
13,230-pound WL-440, have an innovative parallel loader linkage design than
enhances breakout force while still maintaining a parallel load position
throughout the lifting range. The 60-horsepower WL-350 has 10,128 pounds of
breakout force; the 73-horsepower WL-440 has 12,730 pounds of breakout
force. Both units feature hydrostatic drive and limited-slip differentials.

New commercial paving screeds
Terex Roadbuilding says its new VersaScreed series
offers 8- and 10-foot screeds designed for paving subdivisions, county
roads, parking lots, and other commercial applications. The series uses
24-inch-wide main and 8-inch extension screed bottoms for consistent mat
texture across the entire paving width, and the wedge-shaped design of the
extensions is said to shed asphalt when narrowing paving widths, eliminating
trapping and shoveling.
The 8-foot VersaScreed offers variable paving widths
from 8- to 13-feet wide; the 10-foot model provides infinitely variable
widths from 10- to 17-feet wide. Optional bolt-on extensions expand paving
widths to 16 and 20 feet, respectively.
Other features include variable hydraulic vibration
up to 3,000 vpm, and the same tipping-frame technology found on Terex’s
Stretch Series screeds, formerly sold under the Cedarapids brand. This
design is said to eliminate the need for wear strips and shims, and to
better maintain settings between the main frame and extensions.

Gutter broom added
Johnston Sweeper has added a variable gutter broom
on its high-performance air regenerative sweepers, the VT605/650 vacuum and
the 770. The gutter broom features a quick-response positioning control
inside the cab. A joystick lets the operator deploy either broom to any
lateral position, making it possible to avoid obstacles without changing
course.

Twin shaft mixer debuts
Liebherr Concrete Technology has introduced its 2.25
Twin Shaft Mixer to the North American market. The 3-cubic-yard unit is
designed for mine tailing mixing and mine paste backfill applications. It is
powered by a 100-horsepower drive motor and can handle rock sizes up to 4
inches. Liebherr says the unit’s counter-current rotation produces a high
mix quality fast.

Versatility meets power
Caterpillar says its new 930G wheel loader uses the
company’s VersaLink loader linkage to achieve the parallel-lift versatility
of a tool carrier combined with the lifting force and strength of
traditional Z-bar linkage. Equipped with a 2.6-cubic-yard bucket, the
149-horsepower unit develops 30,320 pounds of breakout force — tops in its
class, according to Cat. Other features include excellent fields of vision
to bucket corners and fork tips, a load-sensing hydraulic system, and a
23.8-mile per hour travel speed.

Compact rear view system
Safety Vision says its new SV-LCD50 monitor is one
of the most compact and efficient vision systems for heavy equipment and
haul trucks on the market. It has a 5-inch diagonal screen and a built-in
control box. The monitor features two external triggers with 2.5-second
off-time delay, two-camera input capacity, and an adjustable speaker.

Impact crusher on tracks
The new
Terex Pegson 428 Tracpactor is a
track-mounted, fixed-hammer horizontal impact crusher designed to handle
aggregates and concrete/asphalt rubble. It has a 42- by 28-inch feed opening
and two full-size and two half-size standard manganese blow bars. The unit
is said to have a production capacity of 400 tons per hour with a 20 to 1
reduction ratio.

Sweeps big and small areas
The Madvac CS500 Compact Sweeper introduced by
Johnston Madvac is designed to clean litter from congested,
pedestrian-filled municipal streets, as well as sweeping sidewalks, alleys,
and paths. It has two sweeping brushes clearing a 10-foot, 6-inch swath, and
joystick-control brushes that extend 3 feet for hard to reach areas. A
high-pressure wash down hose cleans food spillage and stains. With a maximum
travel speed of 25 miles per hour, the CS500 can sweep up to 215,777 square
feet per hour.

84-inch ‘Superpave’ roller
Bomag says it designed its new 84-inch tandem-drum
roller specifically to meet Superpave project demands. Compared to the model
it replaces, it has a more efficient engine, revised frame construction, and
a heavier operating weight. The 185-horsepower, 28,425-pound unit has
vibration frequencies up to 4,000 vpm that allow a maximum working speed of
4.5 miles per hour while maintaining 10 impacts per foot. Centrifugal force
output ranges from 34,665 pounds in low amplitude to 41,235 pounds in high
amplitude.

Cuts ownership costs
Caterpillar has rolled out an H-series version of
its 354-horsepower, 9-cubic-yard 988H wheel loader. The new machine features
a Tier-3 compliant engine that Cat says will be more reliable and durable
than the engine it replaces because it has fewer parts, fewer cooling
challenges and is less sensitive to internal acid formation, fuel sulfur
content, and internal wear.
The 988H has virtually identical productivity
potential as the 988G, but it is quieter, more fuel efficient and costs less
to own and maintain. A new rimpull control system improves fuel efficiency
and tire life by providing different traction settings for different
applications to prevent tire slippage and improve cycle times in difficult
conditions.

Improved dump truck
Case has upgraded its 300 series articulated dump
trucks with Tier-2 engines and improved engine air intake for a more
efficient and cleaner burn. Other improvements include reduced service
requirements, easier daily checks due to the use of swing-out fenders and a
hydraulic lift for the hood, and an auto-lube system than continuously
greases all lube points.

Compact excavators debut
Ingersoll-Rand has introduced two new compact
excavators. The 7.5-metric ton ZX-75 and the 12.5-metric ton ZX-125 both
feature zero tail swing and articulating boom systems that allow them to
work outside and parallel to their own tracks. The 72-horsepower ZX-75
weighs 16,538 pounds and has a 13-foot, 11-inch maximum digging depth. The
94-horsepower ZX-125 weights 27,563 pounds and has a 15-foot, 4-inch maximum
digging depth.

Mass earthmovers debut
Tier-3 engines are the hallmark of
Caterpillar’s new
T-series D8, D9, and D10 crawler dozers. The new engines feature a
controller that manages air flow and fuel delivery to optimize production
and fuel efficiency according to operating conditions. The 347-horsepower
D8T, 464-horsepower D9T, and the 646-horsepower D10T have electronically
controlled heavy-duty planetary powershift transmissions, larger cabs,
improved line of sight, and are operated by a single control lever.

8-yard loader works faster
Caterpillar is introducing the H-series version of
its 980 wheel loader this month. It features a new Tier-2 compliant
318-horsepower engine, faster loading cycles, a quieter cab, and improved
serviceability. Equipped with an 8-cubic-yard bucket, the 980H is said to be
10% faster in loading cycles than its predecessor, the 980G-Series II with a
7.5-cubic-yard bucket. Other performance enhancing changes include an
electronic clutch pressure control system for smoother shifts, and a new
cooling system designed to resist plugging.
Improved cab sealing and insulation reduce noise
levels inside the cab by half compared to the G-series model — from 80
decibels to 76 decibels. Serviceability enhancements include a faster
hood-opening system, easy-access pressure taps, and rear fenders that cover
twice as much of the wheel area as the previous design to reduce mud
splatter.
