Water treatment system

OilTrap Environmental has introduced the ElectroPulse system for treating wash-water generated from washing vehicles, equipment, and stormwater run-off in the asphalt industry. The compact, modular system uses electrocoagulation to remove contaminants like emulsified oil, TPH (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon), suspended solids, and heavy metals without the use of filters or chemicals. It can process up to 200 gallons per minute, producing water that can be recycled or discharged to a sanitary sewer or surface-water, according to the company.

Programmable width changes

Gomaco has announced that its V2 dual mold system is now available with an optional auto-width adjustment package to provide sensored control of on-the-go paving width changes. The new feature allows a proportional control to change the width of the mold while paving to produce a tapered slab. Stringline is set to follow the desired tapered slab, and sensors on the paver use the string line to control cylinders for extending the frame and side-shifting the mold. The operator engages the automatic system with the switch of a button as the machine approaches a width transition.

Planning the pour

Gomaco has added a new dimension to its Gomaco Smoothness Indicator (GSI) technology, introduced last year to provide smoothness readings for wet or cured concrete and asphalt slabs. GSITools is a new software application that utilizes data gathered with the GSI before paving takes place to provide a grade accuracy analysis of the subgrade and/or the stringline.  The software can provide an estimated material yield for the project, and pinpoint high and low spots in the subgrade, according to Gomaco.

Bridge hauling trailers

Roger Brothers built two trailers for Pennsylvania contractor Edward Kraemer and Sons to haul more than 1,000 precast bridge segments weighing 100 tons down a steep grade to the Susquehanna River. The trailers were subject to 18 months of continuous service and had to be resaleable when the job was complete. To handle the work, company engineers designed a five-axle, 100-ton-capacity fixed gooseneck trailer with air lift suspension on the fifth axle and spring walking beam suspension on the first four axles. The trailer’s deck size is 35 by 10 feet with pullout outriggers to handle the extra width of the bridge segments, each of which measure 57-feet long by 13-feet wide by 8.5-feet high.
