Pre-crushes RAP

The ACE Group’s Rapwrangler eliminates the need for off-site pre-crushing of large asphalt chunks. Powered by either a 30- or 50-horsepower TEFC motor, the unit has a 20-inch rotor with 312 replaceable tungsten-tipped teeth that shred football-sized chunks of asphalt down to 1 inch at a rate of 250 tons per hour. The rotor is fed from a 30- by 40-inch hopper and it produces a product suitable for introduction into drum mix or batch plants for final sizing.

Faster on the job

John Deere has added two new wheeled excavators to its line of earthmoving equipment. The 121-horsepower 180C W weighs 41,500 pounds, while the 147-horsepower 210C W weighs 45,400 pounds.

Both employ the same one-work-mode hydraulic system used on the company’s crawler excavators.

New track loaders

Case introduced its first line of compact track loaders in March. The 74-horsepower 445CT and the 82-horsepower 450CT offer lift capacities of 3,500 and 3,857 pounds, respectively. The 445CT features vertical lift loader-arm geometry for optimum lifting and placing efficiency, while the 450CT employs a radial-arm configuration for high-production digging and fast load cycle times. The chassis for both come from Case’s 400-series skid-steer line, while the undercarriages are said to incorporate long-life features from Case dozer and excavator designs.

Highway-class 8-foot pavers

Ingersoll Rand introduced a new series of 8-foot highway-class pavers at Conexpo-Con/Agg 2005. The wheel-mounted 5160 and 5170 represent a fusion of technology from IR’s European and North American paver franchises. The pavers have a 13.6-ton hopper, a 185-horsepower engine, and a 30kW generator. New features for this series include an auger system that operates independently of the conveyor system, and the use of sonic sensors in both systems to provide precise material handling. The conveyor system has automatically tensioned chains for consistent performance and lower maintenance  costs.

Ingersoll Rand says its new hydrostatic direct-traction drive system for the pavers reduces maintenance costs by eliminating 70% of all mechanical drivetrain components.

The wheel-mounted 5160 and 5170 employ a patented front wheel suspension design for uniform wheel loading.

A variety of screed options are available for the new pavers, including the company’s new Genesis series, a vibratory design with front-mounted extensions. Other options include a vibratory rear-extension design, and single- or double- tamping-bar configurations.

Wheel excavators updated

Caterpillar has issued a series of improvements for its four-model line of wheel-mounted excavators to boost performance, productivity, serviceability, and operator comfort. Along with new drivetrains, the line gets joystick steering in first gear, proportional hydraulics for work tool control, and adjustable hydraulic sensitivity for quickly adapting the machine to different tasks. New options include offset variable angle booms for working in tight areas, and industrial sticks for material handling jobs.

Rotary mixer handles more

Caterpillar’s new 350-horsepower RM-300 Rotary Mixer can handle full depth reclamation and soil stabilization, and features a sliding operators station, pressurized cab, and two rotor options. Other options include four-mode steering, automatic depth control, and a rear wheel-assist feature which adds a separate hydraulic pump to drive the rear wheels. Equipped with the rear wheel assist, larger rear tires, and the universal rotor, the new machine can handle difficult applications that require maximum depth stabilization high in liquid stabilizing agents such as lime slurry.

Job-mobile crushing and screening

Metso Minerals has introduced the track-mounted Lokotrack LT200HP crushing plant and Locotrack ST352 screening plant to provide mobile crushing and screening operations on a job site or in a quarry. Designed for secondary and fine crushing, the 425-horsepower LT200HP features a Nordberg HP200 cone crusher and can process up to 275 tons per hour and is said to produce a highly cubical product. The ST352 features the company’s SmartScreen technology for monitoring and managing production.

Deep tread tires

Bridgestone Firestone calls its new Bridgestone M850 radial a deep-tread on/off highway tire designed to provide long tread life for flatbed haulers, dumps, and other applications involving hauling to and from construction sites. Along with its deep 24/32-inch tread pattern, the M850 uses a specially designed block/rib tread pattern to avoid the excessive heel-and-toe wear experienced with other on/off-highway tires.

Power on wheels

International calls its truck-mounted Diamond Logic PowerPack 3 generator system pure power on wheels. The patented 3000-watt power system is a factory installed option on medium-duty and severe service vehicles. International says the option virtually eliminates the potential for generator theft, and is more reliable and easier to maintain than most add-on generators.

Short-swing excavators debut

Volvo Construction Equipment has launched a four-model line of short-swing compact excavators for operators working in restricted-space job sites, including highway and bridge work.

The new machines have a uniquely designed swing-system rear frame and counterweight, according to Volvo. The line ranges in size from the 19-horsepower, 6,000-pound ECR28 to the 59-horsepower, 18,000-pound ECR88. All four feature load-sensing hydraulics, quiet operator cabs with 360-degree visibility, and a fuel-saving auto-idle system.

Advanced dozers

John Deere has rolled out the J-series versions of its 115-horsepower 700, 145-horsepower 750, and 185-horsepower 850 crawler dozers. Like the smaller J-series dozers, the new models are designed for flexible machine configurations, to meet the specific needs of the customer. Features include Deere’s proprietary dual-path hydrostatic drive, long-interval maintenance cycles, and redesigned operator stations. The company claims both models deliver more horsepower than competing models in low ground pressure configurations.

GPS-enabled system for excavators

Novariant says its new Logic7D Excavate system designed to boost the productivity of excavators by providing real-time positioning of the machine’s bucket teeth. The system displays the grade and location of the bucket without the need for survey stakes. In addition, excavation can continue when a survey crew is not available, at night or in blinding conditions. The system is powered by the company’s new 7DDuo GPS Receiver, a dual-antenna roof array that determines position and orientation of the machine, and a rugged touch-screen display that was specifically designed for the construction environment. The system also links a series of sensors through a controller area network bus to compute the position of the bucket teeth with pinpoint accuracy. With this information overlaid on plan maps and design data, the equipment operator can control the bucket based on real-time cut/fill, slope location, and depth information.

New earthmover radial

Michelin developed the new X-Super Terrain AD radial tire to deliver long service life mounted on articulated haulers, scrapers, and loaders. The company says the tire features deep tread and durable rubber compound, as well as rugged shoulder and sidewall design. Michelin describes the tread design as aggressive and self cleaning, and claims the tire enhances ride comfort by reducing vibrations.

John Deere has entered the 7-yard-loader class with the all-new 844J. Designed and manufactured by Deere, the machine features a 12.5-liter, 380-horsepower (net) engine with wet sleeve cylinder liners for enhanced cooling. The company claims the 844J has best-in-class cooling and maintenance access to cooling apparatus. The 69,300-pound machine also features a smooth-shifting proprietary transmission, a ride control system, excavator-style hydraulics, and an optional joystick steering control system.

Smaller ejector truck

After introducing dozens of new models in the months leading up to ConExpo-Con/Agg, Caterpillar used the show itself to launch a 31-ton version of its ejector-body articulated hauler. The 317-horsepower, 730 Ejector has a 22.1-cubic-yard body capacity and uses a self-cleaning ejector mechanism to spread and dump material on the go, without raising the body. It has the features of the conventional 730 Articulated Truck, while the ejector technology incorporates features from Cat’s 769D off-highway truck and its wheel scrapers.
