Data collection vehicle
Foundation Mechanics has combined ground penetrating
radar and falling weight deflectometer data collection and storage into one
vehicle. The company integrated the RoadScan GPR system from Geophysical
Survey Systems into its trucks to collect and store pavement thickness
information at each FWD test location. The average difference in thickness
between the physical core and the GPR thickness measurement was less than
4%. The GPR system is fully FCC certified.

Superpave gyratory compactor
A new testing product from Pine Instruments, the
AFG2 gyratory compactor, has a built-in angle measurement capability that
operates using either an internal or external mold angle. Throughout the
entire compaction process, the angle is displayed on the screen along with
the consolidation pressure, gyration number, and specimen height. The
compactor was designed to account for frame compliance and compensates for
varying mix stiffness. It internally stores results from 20 previous tests,
including gyration number, specimen height, angle of gyration consolidation
pressure, and sheer per gyration (optional). Up to 250 mm of loose hot-mix
asphalt can be placed in the tall molds prior to compaction, allowing the
unit to make both 115-mm Superpave volumetric specimens and the 170-mm
specimens required for performance testing.

Balloon lighting system
The new Moonlight glare-free lighting systems from
Multiquip eliminate the fans required to maintain air in other balloon
lights. The balloon inflates in seconds; a simple plug maintains air
pressure and protects the light. The lights have a maximum height of 10
feet; are available in 150-, 400-, and 1,000-watt outputs; and illuminate
areas up to 100 feet away. Features include bulbs that last up to 10,000
hours; durable water-resistant PVC material; and a compact design that stows
away into a protective case when not in use. The lights are stable in winds
up to 55 miles per hour. They set up in minutes and are available in
convenient push cart, wheeled stand, and tripod stand configurations.

Hydraulic post pullers
The new LPP 10 HD post puller from
Atlas Copco is
strong, lightweight, and ideal for removing posts of varying sizes and
shapes. Capable of 6 tons of hydraulic pulling force, the puller can remove
any pole, steel beam, or tube with a diameter up to 8 inches. For difficult
poles, the puller features a built-in manual leverage function to increase
pulling force to 10 tons. The 132-pound unit features a stroke of 8 inches,
integrated hardened jaws for clamping to poles, and a newly designed
automatic chain-tightening function to ensure grip. The puller comes with a
standard 3.3-foot steel chain and a hand lever with an extension rod. Two
support legs prevent the unit from sinking into soft ground.

Rotary cutter
The new XH1500 Series 3 Rotary Cutter from
Schulte
Industries has a single-domed, sweep-clean deck design that eliminates
debris build up and prevents rusting on the top side of the deck. The
0.25-inch-thick stump jumpers with patent-pending Pentagon Blade Bolt design
allows cutter sections to ride over obstructions. Blade to deck contact is
prevented by 0.375-inch-thick formed deck-protection rings.

Wood mulching/land clearing
The redesigned
Morbark Model 4600XL Track Wood Hog
combines rugged durability and high horsepower with the transportability of
smaller machines, meeting road weight requirements. The 82,000-pound
machine’s hammermill is 14% larger than its predecessor, increasing the tip
swing to 36 inches. A new infeed extension folds flat to assist with
processing longer tree-length material and folds up for better containment
in regrind applications. Its Iqan Feed System boosts production levels by
providing a consistent feed and minimizing downtime. This easy-to-operate
programming tool allows the operator to quickly adjust feed systems from the
control panel to obtain maximum production rates while keeping the engine
load constant.

Scoop snowplow
The concave shape of the
Hiniker Scoop
Plow provides great capacity, little spillage, and fast, efficient plowing.
The plow has a 20-degree fixed-angle outer end to help capture snow and can
angle left and right for conventional plowing applications. Available in 8-
and 9-foot lengths, the plow features a high-impact polyethylene moldboard
that creates a low-friction, corrosion-free plowing surface. A three-section
trip-edge with a 9-inch-high pivot point provides maximum protection from
high obstacles such as curbs and parking barriers; each section trips
separately.

Aggregate imaging system
Pine Instrument’s new Aggregate Imaging System is an
automated aggregate analysis system that offers three tests in one. Using
image-based particle characterization, it provides a unified way to measure
angularity, shape, and surface texture. The system’s light table
accommodates up to 50 coarse aggregate particles or hundreds of fine
particles at once. Automatic camera movement scans the entire surface,
individually characterizing each aggregate particle. The system is immune to
operator interference — automatic zoom and illumination controls eliminate
any bias due to particle size or color.

Vibratory plate compactor
MBW’s new GP3550 vibratory plate compacts at 110
feet/minute. In comparison to their GP3000, amplitude increased by 10%,
operating weight decreased by 15 pounds, and hand/arm vibration is down
roughly 70%. The deck features a full roll cage as standard equipment with
an optional water tank for asphalt compaction. The base plate is
self-cleaning with an open-sided plate design that allows material to flow
out and away from the belt/pulley assembly during operation.

Solar LED crosswalk beacon
A new ultra-compact solar LED pedestrian crosswalk
beacon from Carmanah is compact, energy-efficient, and cost-effective. The
R820C can be mounted high above the sidewalk, out of the path of pedestrians
and out of the reach of vandals. With no trenching, cabling, grid-power
hookup, or disruption to traffic flow, it installs in minutes onto any
existing sign post for a fraction of the cost of traditional hardwired
systems. The beacon is entirely self-contained and operational benefits
include no bulbs to replace for the life of the unit, as well as no
scheduled maintenance or servicing for up to five years, at which point only
the battery pack may need exchanging.
