Slab bridge design software
The
Concrete
Reinforcing Steel Institute released a major upgrade to its slab
bridge design analysis software, Slab Bridge Designer 2.0. This
software, which now uses Windows screens to navigate through the bridge
design and resulting analysis, provides analysis based on materials,
bridge geometry, and Load Resistance Factor Design inputs that meet new
AASHTO bridge durability specifications. The updated software leads the
designer through 12 user screens to determine the design inputs of
constant depth, haunched slab, or drop-panel bridge decks; and displays
results in graphical, table, and XML format in the user screens or Web
browser window.

Remote boom control
The
new Mustang Telehandler Radio Remote Boom Control system allows the boom
to be raised and lowered, extended and retracted — all from the
remote-control pendant. Operators can also shutdown or start up the
engine with the remote. The control is compact, portable, and easy to
use.
It features self-diagnostics and Frequency
Hopping Spread Spectrum technology, which concentrates full power into a
very narrow signal and eliminates the risk of interference with other
radio-wave mechanisms. The system is now available on Mustang
Telehandler models 742, 944, and 1155 as a separate option.

Versatile spreader
The new SnowEx Junior 325 spreader from TrynEx
International is designed to achieve precision spreading for small
commercial and private applications. The spreader offers a maximum
torque transmission, low-maintenance engineering, and versatile vehicle
mount options. It features a heavy-duty modular steel frame with a
high-density polymer UV-protected material hopper. The hopper holds a
maximum of 2.7 cubic feet of material and spreads up to a 25-foot width
with a 10-inch steel spinner. The low profile does not obstruct the rear
window, allowing for increased operator visibility.

Sub-compact tractor
New
Holland’s new 25-horsepower TZ25DA Boomer sub-compact tractors have
power to handle front- or rear-mounted implements — from a snow blower
to a front-end loader. The optional Sensitrak system engages and
disengages the four-wheel drive automatically and only when required to
reduce scuffing the turf, to save wear and tear on the tires, and to
increase the life of driveline components. The tractors are easy to
maintain and operate.

Soil/asphalt test system
Interlaken Technology Corporation’s new Compact
Soil and Asphalt Test System performs a complete range of static and
dynamic tests for both soil and asphalt — including requirements of
ASTM, AASHTO, and SHRP specifications, as well as NCHRP 9029 Simple
Performance Tests. Current pre-programmed applications include indirect
tensile creep of asphalt, dynamic modulus, static creep, repeated load,
and resilient modulus. Custom test procedures can be developed by using
Test Builder application software.

Snowplow wing
The
new Boss Plow Wings increase the width of a snowplow blade by a full 22
inches, providing a much longer blade for windrowing, while minimizing
spill off. The wings attach in seconds, making hookup quick and easy
from worksite to worksite. They can be used with all Boss Power-V and
Straight-Blade Snowplows.

Personal heat stress monitor
The QUESTemp II and QUESTemp III Personal Heat
Stress Monitors from Quest Technologies are easy-to-use indicators that
monitor an individual’s body temperature for any sign of the onset of
heat stress. Both units are compact and lightweight with audio and/or
visual alarms and take into consideration the effects of wearing
protective clothing and an individual’s physical condition.

Sign breakaway system put to the test
Earlier this year,
Transpo’s
Break-Safe sign system was put to a real-world test in Fairfield,
Connecticut.
A patrol car responding to an emergency call was
struck by another vehicle. In the process, an Interstate 95 sign,
supported by the Break-Safe system, was struck.
The
Break-Safe symmetrical coupling design is designed to allow signs to
breakaway with a consistent, predictable behavior, regardless of a
vehicle’s angle of impact. In this case, the system did exactly what it
was designed to do. When the vehicle impacted the sign, it broke off at
ground level and fell flat on the ground, avoiding additional damage to
the windshields of the vehicles involved and possible additional
injuries to the drivers.
This breakaway capability exceeds FHWA and
AASHTO requirements for impact performance. All Break-Safe models are
FHWA-approved for use on the National Highway System.

Snowplow sight system
The Boss patented Snowplow Sight System allows
the operator to align the truck and snowplow from the comfort of the
cab. According to the company, when used with their SmartHitch 2
attachment system, the sight system allows the operator to align with
the plow the very first time, every time — no more driving back and
forth to line up and attach a plow. This new option is available for all
Boss Power-V and Straight-Blade Snowplows.

Concrete behavior prediction software
The Transtec Group’s HIPERPAV II, High
PERformance concrete PAVing Software, includes several new features to
help engineers and contractors develop better design and construction
techniques. The software incorporates two new modules. The first allows
users to see the effects that early-age jointed plain concrete pavement
design and construction strategies can have on long-term performance.
The second predicts the behavior of continuously reinforced concrete
pavements for the first days and months after placement. Other
improvements include enhanced materials characterization, additional
flexibility in climatic inputs, and a totally redesigned graphical user
interface that is more user-friendly and efficient.

Improved battery
The Super 4AS2-45 6-volt Air Alkaline Battery
from Celair Corporation lasts eight times longer than typical 6-volt
lantern batteries. It is commonly used in type A, B, C, and D warning
lights and can save on fuel and vehicle usage, as well as requiring less
traffic exposure for workers and less money to maintain.
