Winter-storm treatment strategy

Surface Systems, Inc., a member of Quixote Transportation Technologies, is offering a new service for SCAN Cast customers. STORM Logic provides agencies with a complete winter-storm treatment strategy for chemical usage. STORM Logic, combined with SCAN Cast, allows agencies to determine whether snow or ice will freeze to the pavement and how much chemical is needed to treat the roadways. The suggested chemical treatment is given in gallons per lane mile for liquid applications and pounds per lane mile for granular salt applications, and the treatment strategy is attached to the text discussion. The format is easy to read and easy to follow. Web site delivery makes it readily accessible from the office or home.

Portable work-zone barriers

The new BarrierGuard 800 from Barrier Systems is a rapidly deployable steel safety barrier for use at work zones or as a permanent installation. Six hundred feet of barrier can be delivered to a jobsite in one truck load, lowering costs.

The barrier can be quickly assembled onsite with the QuickMount connection system, which uses only one bolt, allowing a crew to install up to 1000 feet per hour. Its step profile smoothly redirects errant vehicles with very little damage to the vehicle or barrier.

Portable traffic signals

IST International’s portable traffic signals help road construction crews and excavators increase safety and complete projects sooner. Return on investment for flagger operations is one to three months. The SWTL-RTC is a precision timer-based system.

The RDTL (left) full radio-communication system can be configured with vehicle detectors, GPS, remote notification cell alert, and more. It’s simple to use, programmed in a few button clicks, and operates on a single battery. A hand-held remote allows workers to manually control traffic and then return it to automatic cycling.

Sound wall system

The Illinois Department of Transportation approved the SmartTie Wall System developed by Vortex Composite for use as a highway sound wall system. Its post-and-beam system has the look and feel of concrete, but is made of recycled plastic. The recycled plastic technology uses plastic waste that is virtually non-recyclable, including carpet of all kinds, mixed plastics, and even Styrofoam from packaging. Cost of the material is 30% less than concrete, yet stronger and half the weight, and it installs in about half the time of concrete. A state-of-the-art CNC process allows just about any design pattern imaginable from brick to river rock.

Expansion joint filler

Cellu-Cushion EXP 200 foam expansion joint filler from Sealed Air Corporation is a lightweight material that makes it easier to transport and load/unload at the worksite. The flexible foam can be used on straight joints and in curved concrete applications. The easy-to-remove, tear-off strip, which is 0.5-inch from the top, enables proper depth when using sealant without having to purchase an additional cap. The material length can also be easily and quickly trimmed to the exact size using a utility knife. The standard black filler is 0.5-inch thick and available in 4-, 5-, and 6-inch strip widths, at lengths of 5 or 10 feet. Custom thicknesses, widths, lengths, and colors are available on request.

Pavement-marking software

The latest pavement-marking software from Pespa Systems can quickly generate professional pavement marking (striping) drawings. CADMark 3’s most powerful feature, Convert to Markings, allows designers to quickly convert CAD’s roadway elements into pavement marking lines. The software is fully equipped with MUTCD pavement marking lines, arrows, tests, symbols, and traffic signs, allowing designers to easily calculate and store the quantities of standard or custom pavement markings.

Cathodic protection device

The Euclid Chemical Company’s new cathodic protection device features an advanced proprietary design and uses innovative technology to prevent corrosion of embedded reinforcing steel. The Sentinel-GL eliminates the anode ring effect — patching with chloride-free patch material only to have the material around the patch corrode and need patching later. The device is installed in the patch area on the reinforcing bar. The zinc anode in the device becomes a sacrificial anode, delivering self-generating protective current and making the surrounding steel cathodic, thus preventing corrosion. The device’s unique v-notch configuration is engineered for easy, efficient placement on any size of reinforcing bar.

Boom-mounted compactors

Multiquip’s new Rammax RAV Series boom-mounted compactors are designed for efficient and trouble-free mobile and crawler excavation. The RAV-700P  weighs 1,543 pounds, generates 18,450 pounds of centrifugal force, and is well suited for applications on 7- to 20-ton excavators. The RAV-1000P (above) weighs 2,205 pounds, has 24,750 pounds of impact force, and is ideal for larger jobs on 18- to 40-ton excavators. The RAV-400P, available later this year, weighs 882 pounds, produces 11,700 pounds of impact force, and is for use on 2- to 15-ton mini excavators. All three compactors can be equipped with a hydraulic quick-change device that allows the operator to change tools  in a second without having to leave the cab.

Traffic management software

ADDCO’s Virtual Transportation Operations Center Software will be available to state agencies without licensing fees. Agencies taking advantage of this offer agree that any enhancements they make to the product will be made available to all other states using the same license arrangement. The software is capable of controlling dynamic message signs, CCTV cameras, and various sensors. Based on the data collected by the system, it can automatically display travel-time information to motorists, publish real-time conditions to a traveler information Web site, or send e-mail alerts to traffic operations personnel.

Sign reflectors

The Safe-Hit Division of Energy Absorption Systems, a subsidiary of Quixote Transportation Safety, introduced new reflectors that attach easily to practically any post. The Snap-It and Wrap-It (shown) reflectors enhance the overall visibility of sign posts and improve the visibility of steel post delineators. Snap-It reflectors can be used on U channel posts instead of button reflectors for a more durable reflector with a much larger surface area to provide better benefits for night driving. The Wrap-It reflector is practical for odd-shaped or larger posts. It’s easy to install and produces an intrinsic hazard pattern when installed. Both are made from a durable plastic material which eliminates rusted and dented metal reflector devices. The reflectors are available in several sizes, reflective properties, colors, and decal options.

Innovative cement blend

LaFarge’s Tercem 3000 ternary  cement blend is a hydraulic cement containing a blend of silica fume, blast furnace slag, and Portland cement. It’s blended for high strength, improved durability, and superior placing and finishing qualities. Tercem provides performance benefits that include improved 28-day strengths, reduced permeability, improved rheology and pumpability of concrete (especially in hot weather), reduced concrete bleeding, and improved resistance to alkali-silica reactions. Production of the blend uses less energy and reduces CO2 emissions and is recognized as a recovered product by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Tercem 3000 won the Expert’s Choice Award for the most innovative product in concrete-making materials at this year’s World of Concrete.
