The Magic Is Back

What you need to know to plan for a magical World of Asphalt show and convention.

by Rick Zettler, Contributing Editor

After a one-year hiatus to make way for last year’s blockbuster ConExpo-Con/Agg trade show, North America’s premier exhibition and conference for the latest technologies and equipment dedicated solely to the asphalt industry returns. This year’s venue is the magical city of Orlando, Florida.

While the northern two-thirds of the United States is just waking up from a long winter’s nap, things will already be heating up in this tropical city. There is so much to do in the Orlando area — Walt Disney World, The Magic Kingdom, Universal Studios, and Sea World just to name a few — that delegates won’t have to worry about finding something to do. Rather, you’ll be wondering how to fit it all in.

But the hottest ticket in town from March 13-16, 2006, will be World of Asphalt 2006 at the Orange County Convention Center. Two days of conferences dedicated to industry topics like warm-mix asphalt, porous asphalt, and recycling, as well as 35 training sessions covering people, plants, paving, and safety are just the tip of the iceberg. Taking center stage at World of Asphalt 2006 will be the equipment and services displays covering a record 56,000 net square feet of exhibit space and a live demonstration focusing on the best paving practices.

Delegates 18 years of age and older registering prior to the February 10, advance registration deadline will be automatically entered into drawings for exclusive Orlando and World of Asphalt prizes.

Shuttle service

World of Asphalt will provide shuttle service between the Orange County Convention Center and three of the Host Hotels — Rosen Plaza Hotel, Quality Inn Plaza, and Best Western Plaza. Since The Peabody and Rosen Center Hotel are within walking distance of the convention center, no shuttle service will be provided to these hotels.

Shuttles will run every 15 to 20 minutes during peak times — the opening and closing of the show — and every 30 minutes during non-peak times. Dates and times for the shuttles are as follows:

Tuesday, March 14 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Wednesday, March 15  7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Thursday, March 16  7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

What to pack

Dig deep into the crates and brush off the golf shirts and shorts, as Orlando’s tropical March weather will give the northern winter survivors a much-needed break from the snow and cold. At most, you’ll need a light jacket with the average nighttime temperatures dipping just below 60 degrees F.

Temperatures during World of Asphalt promise to be balmy, with average highs reaching 79-degrees F and lows only 56-degrees F. But beware! Cold snaps have driven temperatures as low as the middle 30s.

International delegates

World of Asphalt is offering increased onsite support for international attendees. The International Information desk on the show floor will offer multilingual assistance to international attendees who have general questions, need help locating exhibits, want conference information and want to know more about the City of Orlando.

There will be a lounge dedicated to international visitors. Additionally, several training sessions and the live demo will also be simultaneously simulcast in Spanish. Go to the World of Asphalt Web site and click on the International Visitors tab for registration and more information.

Preview the exhibitors

Who will be exhibiting what type of equipment at the show? You can find out even before traveling to Florida through the Virtual Trade Show. Found on the World of Asphalt Web site, the VTS enables you to locate exhibitors by company name or by products and services. You can view equipment, products, technologies, and services, or preplan your show visit from the office or home 24/7.

Finally, here are some Web sites that will help you plan for activities outside of World of Asphalt. One site even offers special World of Asphalt delegate discounts — www.worldofasphalt.com (links to Orlando information sites); www.orlandoinfo.com; and www.orlandoconventionaid.com/directory_view.php?dir_id=102.
