Asphalt- rubber
overlays growing in New England states
The Rubber Pavements Association reports
that its lone eastern seaboard member says that the use of asphalt-rubber is growing
throughout the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut,
and New York. The RPA is dedicated to encouraging greater use of high-quality,
cost-effective asphalt pavements containing recycled tire rubber.
Paul Montenegro, special projects manager for All States Asphalt in Sunderland,
Massachusetts, says the primary use has been asphalt-rubber stress absorbing membranes and
interlayers (SAM/SAMI) at the municipal level. However, several state departments of
transportation in the region are beginning to use the material in hot mixes as well as
spray-applied membranes, he added.
While Montenegro says the New England market has been growing steadily, he adds that it
has still basically gone unnoticed because most of the industrys attention is
focused on large states, such as Texas, and the southwestern states of Arizona and
California. The RPA reported that All States Asphalt, and its affiliate New England
Emulsions, are the contractors leading the way to increased use of asphalt-rubber in the
east.
