A look at mowers

Mower accessories

A look at mowersFor those with Excel Industries’ Hustler front-mount mowers and turf tractors, the StumpCut’R brings new opportunity for efficiency and productivity. Mounted on the zero-turn Hustler, the attachment can get in and out of position much faster than self-propelled, trailer-type, or walk-behind cutters. Since it’s an attachment, it can be removed and stored. The unit is so simple in design, there are very few moving parts. The cutting wheel uses industry-standard cutting teeth and pockets.

Also new from the company is a manual deck lift for its Shortcut line of ultra-compact riding mowers. The deck lift allows the operator to raise or lower the deck from the operator’s station (sitting or standing) for trailering, curb hopping, and quick-and-easy cutting-height changes.

In collection for mid-mount Models 251K and 260K, there’s the new 8-bushel BAC-PAC, a direct-feed hopper that requires no blower, no pony motor, and no transfer tube. It’s a commercial catching system that never has to be unplugged. Dumped from the driver’s seat, the unit is excellent for leaf removal and clean-up. If it plugs, the mower blades will blow the obstruction right out, the company says. And for the Hustler 4000-Series tractors, there’s always the Hi-Lift BAC-VAC, a 15-bushel-capacity steel hopper.

Mower parts

Governmental Mower Parts is affiliated with Herschel-Adams, a long-time industry leader in cutting parts and tillage tool production. The combination of two manufacturing facilities and six strategic warehouse locations allows GMP to streamline the distribution channel, so buying factory direct and using the GMP catalog can save you time and money, the company says.

The latest 220-page catalog includes rotary cutter blades and bolts, sickle mower parts, hydraulics, PTO drivelines and components, gearboxes, slip clutches, implement jacks, flail shredder knives and accessories, tires, wheels, tractor accessories, three-point hitch parts, roller/binder chains, and a lot more. You can take advantage of GMP’s extensive product line, same-day shipping, and convenient payment methods, and orders can be mailed or faxed.

Electronic fuel injection

Walker Manufacturing Company says the Walker Mower 2000 Model MT is now available with a Kohler 26-hp Electronic Fuel Injection engine option. Operators will experience the Walker tractor design while enjoying more power and a fuel savings of about 30 to 40% over the 25-hp model with the carburetored engine.

The engine package also offers easy starting over a wide temperature range, less maintenance, and improved throttle response. Troubleshooting is made simple with built-in, automotive-type diagnostics, the company says.

Zero-radius mower

The Grasshopper Company’s redesigned Model 928D2 Zero-Radius Outfront Mower features a powerful 28-hp diesel engine and G2 dual-path hydrostatic direct drive. It accepts Combo Decks from 52 to 72 in. for easy conversion from collection to discharge to mulching — with the same deck. Collectors are available from 15 to 25 cu.ft. and the Quik-D-Tatch mounting system lets you change deck sizes or add attachments in just minutes without tools. Grasshopper offers a complete line of year-round attachments and accessories, too.

Heavy-duty mower

There’s now a 72-in. Prowler Mid Cut from Encore Power Equipment in addition to the 61-in. model already in the Prowler Series. All Prowlers have a dual-path hydrostatic drive with zero-turning radius. They’re heavy-duty machines with a 7-ga. steel deck plate, 10-ga. steel top plate, and special deck reinforcement channels.

Prowler Mid Cuts feature a full floating deck suspension to smooth out the ride and improve the cut on rough terrain. To give the blades the power they need to maintain a level cut at high speeds — up to 10 mi./hr. — there’s a PTO shaft rather than belts. To help you hold the speed and quality, a 5.5-in.-deep deck handles grass better than typical shallow decks. A new blade spindle has eliminated the grease zerk, making the spindle assembly more durable and routine maintenance easier. Engines include Kawasaki and Daihatsu gas and diesel, and high-hp options on both the 72-and 61-in. cutting decks.

Rotary and offset mowers

The Alamo Hydro 15Alamo Industrial has three machines for different applications. The Interstater provides power, ease of operation, and finish when mowing large areas such as along highways. With left and right side mowers, the Interstater will mow a 20-ft. swath, cutting 12 acres/hr. at 5 mi./hr. It has adjustable, hydraulically operated, 88-in. wings that can mow slopes, ditches, or flatlands, and can be raised to avoid obstacles. Sharp flail knives with free-swinging action slice easily through grass for a smooth, even finish, and the heavy housing and vertical flail action deflect debris downward rather than outward.

The Machete is a boom mower that’s built stronger with more power than any boom mower in its class, according to Alamo. By using a closed-loop hydraulic process, the entire system is more efficient and produces less heat. The piston pump and motor will achieve 96% efficiency because more energy is transmitted to the mechanical elements within the system. The Machete operator can control all boom movements with a single joystick, including the electro-hydraulic proportional lift, swing, and dipper arm.

And the Hydro 15 is a hydraulically powered, flex-wing rotary mower that will cut a 15-ft.-wide swath through tough grass and weeds. There are no drivelines coming from the tractor’s PTO to the mower, and no gearboxes or moving parts above the mower deck. Flexible hoses carry the pressurized hydraulic fluid to the mower’s motor, allowing the tractor to turn at any angle to the point where the tractor wheel touches the mowing unit. As a safety feature, when a wing of the Hydro 15, shown below, is folded above any desired angle, the blade will come to a complete stop.

Commercial mowers

The John Deere 7-Iron Commercial Mower Decks provide commercial cutters with thick, durable mowing decks that don’t sacrifice cut quality. The decks are stamped from a single sheet of 7-ga. steel, so there are no welds to wear or break. The stamped design also means a smooth underside, without corners, to reduce material buildup for a cleaner cut. A deep deck design increases airflow so more material can be processed and the operator can mow at faster speeds. The design also provides better material flow in heavy, wet grass conditions.

With almost 11 ft. of cutting width and a powerful engine, the company’s 1600 Wide-Area Mower scampers over large, open spaces at a clip of 8.5 acres/hr. at 6.5 mi./hr. It’s designed specifically for use by municipalities and for other applications where speed equals economy. A 51-hp diesel engine is liquid cooled for quieter operation and more consistent power on a long job.

Riding mower

The Dixon ZTR 7025 is the newest commercial riding mower from Dixon Industries. Powered by a rugged 25-hp Kohler Command engine, it features all-steel construction and 23-in. rear tires. The full-floating deck — available in 52- and 60-in. cut widths — has easy underside access for blade maintenance. Its zero-turning radius makes the 7025 easy to maneuver, and the wide-open ground speed of up to 10 mi./hr. makes short work of big mowing jobs, the company says.

Turf equipment

Saxon Turf Equipment sells products manufactured by parent-company Wolfe Metal Fab, Inc. The Saxon Tri-Wing Rotary Mowers were the first tri-wing mowers on the market, the company says, with a cutting width of over 11 ft. and independent floatation with two pivot points per deck, allowing front-to-rear and side-to-side floatation for maximum ability in following ground contour and minimal chance of scalping.
