A look at street sweepers

Auto-sensing brooms

The Gladiator is Sweepster’s new hydraulic drive rotary sweeper that’s the right choice for all your sweeping needs, the company says. Tough and versatile, the self-propelled, front-mounted unit’s optional auto-sensing, heavy-duty brush automatically adjusts to surface level — saving you money in replacement bristles. Features include a 58-, 68-, or 78-hp 4-cycle diesel engine, power steering, closed-loop hydrostatic drive, 72-in. sweeping path, and a compact design.

Four sweepers

Athey Products Corporation has four different kinds of sweeping machines to highlight. First is the M9E 4-Wheel Mechanical Mobil Sweeper that features a Freightliner cab and chassis. It comes with a single 6-cylinder CAT engine and Allison Automatic World Transmission. It easily gets around parked cars with its 18.5-ft. turning radius, and there’s an optional variable high-lift dump hopper with 13,000-lb.-design lift capacity.

The company’s RA730B Regenerative Air Sweeper also has a Freightliner cab and chassis, CAT engine, and Allison transmission. It has a two-speed hydraulic blower drive and comes in variable high-lift or low-dump models.

The 3WS 3-Wheel Mechanical Mobil Sweeper has a Cummins 110-hp turbocharged diesel engine with a continuous molded belt or squeegee elevator available. And Athey’s 712 Force Feed Loader is excellent for ditch cleaning, municipal leaf loading, snow removal, loading/unloading salt storage, milling operations, and much more.

Mounted sweepers

The heavy-duty SHL Sweeper mounts in place of the bucket on skid-steer loaders, and quick-attach mounting makes installation and removal fast and easy, according to M-B Companies, Inc. Manual angle changes 30 degrees to the right and left are standard, and a hydraulic swing system with electric valve is available.

Regenerative sweepers

The Elgin Sweeper Company has two new regenerative street sweepers. The Crosswind regenerative air sweeper gives agencies a powerful machine with unequaled versatility, flexibility, and productivity, the company says. Re-engineered to be more powerful and durable, the Crosswind offers sweeping performance for better pick up and catch basin cleaning.

Elgin’s Five Star Series has the new single-engine AirBear, a regenerative, high-side-dump street sweeper that’s also designed for power and durability. The company says it’s easy to operate and has a simple-to-maintain design. Large 42-in.-diameter brooms provide a full 12-ft. sweep path, and debris is held in a 5.5-cu.yd. hopper while a 350-gal. tank provides the dust suppression.

New acquisition

Rosco Manufacturing Company recently acquired the Challenger II self-propelled broom from Smith Equipment & Supply Co. It features high-maneuverability, maximum visibility, and ease of maintenance. The Challenger II uses a front-mounted broom that provides greater flexibility to work in tight spots. With a large sweeping angle of +/-40 degrees, the operator can select from a wide variety of broom configurations for any application.

Gutter attachment

Designed as an attachment to work with Melroe Company’s existing Bobcat Sweeper attachment, the Gutter Brush extends sweeping capabilities by more than a ft., providing a total sweeping range of 54 to 72 in. that’s ideal for cleaning hard-to-reach areas such as curbs, drainage areas, and alongside buildings. The Bobcat Sweeper and Gutter Brush combination fits all Bobcat 700, 800, and 900 skid-steer loaders.

Mower attachment

John Deere’s 246 Rotary Broom attachment is compatible with the company’s F900 Series and F1145 Front Mowers. With a swing arm attachment, it is also suitable for the 55 Series compact utility tractors.

The attachment has a 60-in. brush width, 24-in. brush diameter, and a 51-in. sweeping path at 30 degrees. Thirty-two alternating steel and polypropylene wafers provide an ideal cleaning and sweeping combination, the company says, and wafers can be replaced and changed to fit the job.
