Enhanced stop signs

Developed to reduce accidents and save lives, the Blinkerstop BR-1-130 from TAPCO (Traffic & Parking Control Company) is a stop sign enhanced with bright red LEDs. It uses a 30-in., 3M VIP Diamond Grade sheeted aluminum stop sign with super-bright (over 6,000 mcd), patented LEDs.

TAPCO stop signBlinkerstop has many benefits over conventional signage and even signals. It alerts drivers much farther in advance — up to two miles away. It operates on its own power, so it’s independent and not subject to power outages. By using its own battery and solar panel, it offers tremendous energy savings over signals. It’s recommended that it be used at new stop locations, high-accident and blind intersections, pedestrian crossings, and work zones. Remote installations are no problem because you don’t need to run power to the site.

TAPCO also makes the Blinkerstop Paddle, a handheld stop sign that uses the same ultra-bright, flashing LEDs to protect children, crossing guards, and work-zone crews. The LEDs are so bright, they are highly visible in all conditions, even in full sunlight.

Safety lights

Additional crash-tested and NCHRP-350-certified models have been added to the solar-powered Safety Assist Lights from K & K Systems, Inc. The lights are used for intersection warnings, caution areas, stop signs, road closures, high water crossings, railroad crossings, work zone areas, school zones, and many other applications. Control choices include remote receiver, manual, timing module, radio, and various combinations. Once placed in operation, the system flashes continuously. Timer modules turn system models on and off daily, while remote controls turn other models on and a timer module turns them off.

Since the systems are powered by solar energy, there are no expensive batteries to constantly replace, and you can use the system again and again at different work sites. The company says that more and more contractors and DOTs are choosing to set ‘em and forget ‘em, and the system is currently being used extensively by the Tennessee DOT. Custom-designed systems are available.

Traffic service products

The U.S. Traffic Corporation and its two divisions, Display Solutions and Myers Custom Products, continues to be at the forefront of traffic control technology with LED lights and pedestrian signals, the latest in NEMA TS2 controllers, and detectors and conflict monitors that reflect the latest advancements. There’s also the ATS Multigraphics that provides computerized traffic control management in a familiar Windows graphical format.

Among the numerous products is the Sunray line of message signs that includes vehicle-mounted and trailer units. Very hot right now is the Sunray 115R Radar Display that reads out vehicle speeds along with messages such as Too Fast. It’s solar powered with a driver-safe amber display, and it meets or exceeds all state and federal MUTCD traffic safety speculations. The company says it’s the only radar speed unit to display multiple, four-character, scrolling messages.

Warning lights

Ideal for traffic control and emergency crews, Lumastrobe’s Model BT-10 handheld baton warning light with flash enhancer commands instant attention at dusk or during the night. Ten bright red LED bulbs flash 120 times per minute and can be seen more than a half mile away. The baton measures 21.75 in. in overall length, 1.5 in. in diameter, and a full 13 in. in illuminated surface area. It weighs 1 lb. with two D batteries and will continuously flash for up to 300 hours. Add the Intensifier reflector for an additional 2 in. of reflectability on each side.

The company also makes the Model PWL (personal warning light) that’s a combined flasher and flashlight. Compact and rugged, the handheld dual-purpose unit is powered by two AA batteries. Two separate buttons switch on either the red flashing 3-in. section of nine LED warning lamps or the end-projected flashlight. The PWL is waterproof and has a magnet in the handle end that will adhere to a metal surface. It measures 6.75-in. long and 1.5 in. in diameter.

Pedestrian protection

Traffic Safety Corporation has developed equipment-based traffic control systems that work toward getting motorists to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. The systems consist of yellow, rapidly flashing airport-style lights embedded in the roadway to warn drivers that pedestrians are present.

The inpavement systems are typically used at crosswalks and along the entire length of school zones, and usually increase drivers’ yield compliance to about 75% — up from 20 to 30%. The systems are included in the new Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (Section 4L) and are very economical to purchase and install.

Fluorescent cones

Direct Safety Company’s fluorescent lime traffic cones increase pedestrian and driver awareness. They’re made of flow-molded PVC with a white inner liner, and a wide body design increases stability. The cones are available in 18-, 28, and 36-in. heights. The company offers a certified safety professional and free technical support line to assist with compliance and application issues.

Pavement marking

Day or night, wet or dry, the 180-mil GulfLine Inverted Profile is one of the brightest and most durable pavement marking systems on the market, according to the GulfLine Corporation. The system uses technology that produces retro-reflectance two to four times greater than other pavement markings, and proper installation of the system can produce Mirolux 12 dry readings of 800 mcd for white and 500 mcd for yellow markings, and Mirolux 12 wet readings of 400 mcd for white and 250 mcd for yellow markings.

GulfLine vertical face profiles are spaced one in. apart, creating more than 63,000 rpms/mi. and a stripe that’s protected from traffic abuse. The Audible Inverted Profile, like a rumble strip, produces a distinctive noise and perceptible vibration when driven over, alerting motorists that they are out of the lane or off the roadway. The company offers a three- to six-year wet and dry reflectance warranty for the Inverted Profile pavement marking system.

Work-zone signs

Reflexite Americas has expanded its line of road construction work-zone signs with the addition of the Endurance Work Zone Sign, the first product to come out of a joint effort between Reflexite and General Electric Structured Plastics. The two companies have combined their technologies, using high-performance, retroreflective sheeting with proprietary thermoplastic material for outstanding durability, light weight, and high visibility.

Endurance Work Zone Signs were independently tested and met the NCHRP 350 test criteria. The signs also provide a low total cost of ownership because of their ability to withstand rough handling and exposure to extreme weather conditions. Because they are lightweight and easy to set up and take down, the signs can significantly improve productivity. At 11.5 lbs./48-in. square sign, the weight is roughly half that of a typical aluminum sign, and about one third of a standard plywood sign of the same size.

Retractable delineator

Safe-Hit Corporation’s Retractor is an automatic retractable lane delineator that guides and channelizes traffic at locations requiring repetitive lane usage or traffic pattern changes. It’s ideal for use in toll plaza lanes, tunnels, reversible lanes, and more. The unit’s durable and flexible channelizing delineator post is automatically raised into position to provide positive guidance to traffic. When not in use, the system’s electric motor quickly lowers the delineator post into a recessed cartridge.

Delineator posts

The heavy-duty Dura Post products from The Line Connection, Inc. are composed of a minimum of 50% post-industrial regrind polyure-thane, including the bases. The post is designed as a one-piece unit with no inner workings to break down or pull apart. Since they are injection molded rather than extruded, the company was able to create a patented taper design that makes the flexibility and function an integral part of the product. The characteristic stretch of the polyurethane material also enhances the quality and durability of the products because it allows them to give with abuse.

The products are available as 3- by 36-in. delineators/channelizers, 18-in. K-Markers, and 4- by 21-in. Vertical K-Markers or Q-Markers. The usual colors are white, yellow, and orange, but the company also offers special colors for a minimum order of 250.
