Last Winter's rough weather brought home the need for
a sound ice and snow control program. The right materials and
equipment make such a program easier to implement.
Deicing defines the process of chemically removing ice
and snowfall from the roads after a storm. Anti-icing takes a proactive
approach: treating the roads prior to storms to repel precipitation
buildup.
To find the latest deicing and anti-icing treatment
and application equipment, you could call individual marketers one by
one to ask about their products. However, Better Roads has done the
legwork for you.
For this month’s product focus, we conducted an
independent mailing and phone solicitation asking suppliers to tell us
about their new and/or featured offerings of deicing and anti-icing
products. All of those who responded are covered in this update.
For more information on any of the products listed,

will open in a new window -- keep window open for additional entry -

information.
Remote activated anti-icing system
For permanent installation along bridges and other high-risk winter
roadways, Quixote Corp. introduces FreezeFree System. Available through Energy
Absorption Systems Inc., the system supplies liquid chemical
inhibitors before temperatures and precipitation reach a point where ice
can form and bond to the road. Chemicals are distributed on command from
on-site manual control or via remote activation by telephone or beeper.
The anti-icing system can be used to protect a two-lane road up to two
miles in length; with in-pavement nozzles, it can service highways with
an unlimited number of lanes.

Dry calcium chloride
For melting ice and snow on streets, sidewalks, and parking lots,
Tetra 94 calcium chloride pellets contain an active ingredient
concentration of 94 to 97% for high heat dissolution and fast melting
action. Engineered by Tetra with a faceted shape, the pellets are
designed to be more controllable than round configurations. Calcium
chloride has a practical freezing point of -25 degrees F and a eutectic
freezing point of -60 degrees F. The company also offers Tetra 80 for
application where 77 to 80% traditional flake is utilized by state DOTs
and municipalities. Both products can be premixed with salt or
abrasives.

Mechanically blended deicer
Delivered pre-mixed and ready for application, ClearLane treated salt
eliminates the need for subsequent spray treatment by municipality
consumers. Mechanically blended, the deicing salt includes cane molasses
and magnesium chloride in a uniform blend for consistent results.
Offered by Cargill Salt, the product is designed to stick to pavement
upon application and is reported by the company to reduce corrosion and
offer cost savings benefits in comparison to untreated rock salt.

Liquid deicer
 From
Dow Chemical Co., Liquidow Armor is a corrosion-inhibited liquid
solution form of calcium chloride available in 32% concentration.
According to the company, the deicer meets or exceeds corrosion
specifications developed by Pacific Northwest States Coalition (PNS). It
maintains liquid form to temperatures of -17 degrees F, and contains no
insoluble impurities such as sulfates or carnallite. For use as an
anti-icing agent, product can be applied at rates of 20 to 50 gallons
per lane mile. Used as a pre-wetting agent, it is applied at rates of 6
to 10 gallons per ton of material. Pre-wetting decreases the amount of
salt and abrasives lost to bounce and scatter, and increases the melt
speed of salt.

Motorized valves
Electric valves are offered by KZCO Inc. in a range of sizes from
0.25- to 5-inches, in 12 and 24-volt AC/DC configurations. Valves are
offered in ball, butterfly, and stackable manifold styles; materials
include polypropylene and stainless steel. Pressure rating is up to 2000
psi. An array of motor cycle times accommodate applications including
automatic flow control metering and quick cycle time shut off valve use.
Actuators are sealed and waterproof to NEMA 6P rating.

Ice-melting compound
Alcohol-based Ice-MC spray is designed to prevent ice and frost from
forming and rinses clean with water. For use on maintenance windshields,
windows, headlights, taillights, and door locks the SHH Company liquid
can be sprayed in advance of cold weather to prevent ice from forming.
Applications include stopping misting and fogging on windows, dissolving
ice and frost from windshields, and thawing frozen locks.

Salt storage building
Interior
clearance of 30-feet allows trucks to dump salt under cover throughout
the entire Hi-Arch Gambrel storage building from Advanced
Storage Technology. The facility is designed to accommodate
capacities from 500 tons up and multiple pile layouts can be provided
without the need for conveyors. For additional storage of spreader boxes
or to serve as office space, a lean-to attachment is optional. The
building is engineered to allow future expansion to meet growing storage
needs.

Salt and deicing material spreader
Equipped
with a pivot mount option, Pivot-Pro 1075 Tailgate Spreader from SnowEx,
a division of TrynEx International, is designed for use by large and
small snow and ice control contractors. The unit accommodates salt,
sand, and deicing materials. Its pivot mount requires no drill holes in
the truck bed and swings to provide full tailgate or rear door access. A
2-inch receiver hitch mount is standard and a three-point mount is
offered. Mounted in a weather-tight enclosure, the system includes a
12-volt DC motor and maximum torque transmission.

Ice and snow melting compound
Non-corrosive, Garon De-Icer is offered by Garon Products in pure
white, crystalline pellet form. Effective down to -60 degrees F, the
OSHA-compliant product can be applied after snowfall to prevent heavy
accumulation. Pellets are designed to release radiant heat upon contact
with ice and snow.

New Environmentally Safe De-Icers
Glacial
Technologies, LLC, the company formed by Minnesota Corn Processors
and METSS Corporation, has introduced three new non-chloride liquid de-icers
developed to meet U.S. Department of Defense needs. Like the company’s
chloride-enhanced de-icers, the new products use agricultural base stock
materials. NC1000 is for highway applications, NC2000 is designed for
bridge decks and parking ramps, and NC3000 is for driveways and
sidewalks.

All season flake deicer
Available from Calum,
Calso 98 deicer flake combines an engineered fusion of calcium, sodium,
magnesium and potassium chlorides. Each flake consists of a set
concentration of the four key elements and is said to compare in
performance to calcium, chloride and magnesium chloride. Deliquescent
and hygroscopic, the deicer dissolves from a solid to a liquid as it
attracts and absorbs moisture from the air and surroundings. Exothermic
properties release heat as flakes dissolve, resisting freezing down to
-25 degrees F. Described as environmentally safe, the all season product
is 98% active by weight and can be used straight or blended with sand
and salt.
